If you asked Ryan Wilson last week about his feelings about this past weekend’s double-dose of 50-lap shootouts in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) at Caraway (N.C.) Speedway, he would have told you he “felt real good.”
It turns out that Wilson’s intuition was directly on point as the driver No. 12 Southern Pharmacy Services / Randolph Bank Toyota was able to record a strong runner-up position in race number one. However, in race number two, Wilson wasn’t going home without the trophy and blasted his way from his fourth place starting spot to grab the lead and set sail to his first checkered flag of the season.
“Our No. 12 Southern Pharmacy Services / Randolph Bank Toyota was super strong all day long,” offered Wilson. “We qualified third but had to start fifth in the first race. It was just using patience to get to the front and ran out of time and had to settle for second. In the second race, I was focused and determined. We had such a good car that I wanted to get our guys back to Victory Lane again because they deserve it. They bust their tails and hopefully this is the first of many wins this year. I really want to thank Southern Pharmacy Services, Randolph Bank and my family for their support of our program, because without them, we would not be racing.”
The victory was redemption for the hometown favorite. In the previous weekend’s contest at Caraway (N.C.) Speedway, Wilson once again show immense speed in his No. 12 Southern Pharmacy Services / Randolph Bank Toyota, but as he began to make his move towards the lead minor damage to the duct work forced his automobile to overheat and lose power, ending up a disappointing eighth place with a DNF (did not finish).
“It’s a great feeling to go from something that (losing a motor) to coming back the next weekend and sealing the deal with a win,” explained Wilson. “Kirk (Bryant) and the guys come to the track with their game face on every weekend wanting to win. Darrell (Poe) and DP Performance provides us some great power underneath the hood, it’s just overall a great feeling to see and hold that checkered flag.”
The 20-year old is also hoping that the triumph will help the team off the track as far as sponsorship that will allow the Ryan Wilson Motorsports (RWM) team to increase their schedule this season.
“We’re trying to race everywhere we can,” offered Wilson, the 2010 fall winner of Richard Petty Driver Search II. “Hopefully, the win gives us that extra ump for someone to see the capabilities of our race team and they’ll jump aboard and let us show them what this team is really capable of.”
Action resumes for the RWM team again at Caraway on Saturday, April 21 for a 100-lap dash.
