Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America competitors are headed across the Atlantic Ocean this week in search of race wins and titles in two championships.
Circuito de Jerez in Spain is the site as 25 entries from the single-make series sanctioned by IMSA conducts the final doubleheader round of its 12th North American season on Thursday and Friday to determine the four class champions. Following that on Saturday and Sunday, the North American teams will do battle with their Super Trofeo counterparts from Europe and Asia in the two-race World Finals that decides international bragging rights. All races will stream live on the Lamborghini Squadra Corse YouTube page.
Heading into the sixth and final round of the North American championship featuring identical Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2s for all competitors, none of the four class championships have been decided – though a couple are close.
In the top Pro class, Giano Taurino and Ernie Francis Jr. – co-drivers of the No. 88 TR3 Racing, Lamborghini Miami Huracán – hold a 12-point lead over Nico Jamin and Kiko Porto in the No. 4 Ansa Motorsports, Lamborghini Broward Huracán. One more point back are Danny Formal and Ryan Norman, who share the No. 1 Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán.
With scoring ranging from 15 points for a race win down to one point for 10th place (plus a point awarded for pole position in each race), nothing is assured. But podium finishes in both races would put Taurino and Francis in good stead for their first Super Trofeo championships.
The ProAm class features the tightest points battle heading to Jerez. AJ Muss and Joel Miller (No. 66 Forty7 Motorsports, Lamborghini Philadelphia Huracán) are six points up on Nate Stacy and Nick Persing (No. 8 Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán). Muss and Miller have risen to the class lead despite just one win this season but have been bolstered by five other podium finishes.
Anthony McIntosh and Glenn McGee (No. 69 Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán) are on the precipice of capturing their second straight Am class championship. With a 17-point lead and riding a four-race winning streak, they need only finish ahead of Dominic Starkweather (No. 47 Precision Performance Motorsports, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán) in either 50-minute race to nail down the crown. In LB Cup, Nick Groat (No. 57 One Motorsports, Lamborghini Newport Beach Huracán) only has to start one of the races to seal the class championship.
Race times for the North American finales are 6:25 a.m. ET Thursday and 7:40 a.m. Friday.
For the World Finals, the sheer size of the field from the three Super Trofeo series mandates splitting the classes into two races each day. The Am and LB Cup classes race together at 7:55 a.m. Saturday and 5:50 a.m. Sunday. The Pro and ProAm class races are set for 10:15 a.m. Saturday and 8:40 a.m. Sunday. Points are awarded on the same scale (15 for winning a race down to one for 10th place, plus pole position points), with the team collecting the most points across the two races declared World Finals class champions.
