For Williams, who comes into the race sixth in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA championship standings, 2024 is the third straight year that he has competed in the famous Western World Championships. His best outing in the race came in last year’s preliminary night when he finished eighth.
Williams, who resides in Yorba Linda, California, spent time away from racing last week. Two weeks ago, he ran back-to-back nights when USAC/CRA made its first-ever visit to the quarter-mile Imperial Valley Raceway. Opening night, he qualified eighth fastest and placed third in his heat. Starting on the outside of the front row in the main. Williams, 28, raced within the top five until getting caught up in someone else’s mess later in the race. Unfortunately, that scrape resulted in him getting saddled with an 18th-place finish.
Twenty-four hours later, Williams rebounded nicely from the first night. He qualified in the 15th spot. He steered the pretty #5W under the checkered flag in second place in his 10-lap heat race. Unfortunately, he had to start 15th in the main event. However, he put on a crowd pleasing show once the race began. After starting 13th, he passed six cars and finished the 30 lapper in seventh. Only two other drivers passed more cars than Williams in the exciting race.
This week will be the third appearance for National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Rip Williams’ youngest son at Mohave this year. Thus far, he has finished in the ninth and 12th places at “Arizona’s Baddest Bullring” in 2024. The ninth was his best finish at the track since USAC/CRA started heading there in 2022.
Fans who cannot make it to Mohave Valley to see Williams and all the other stars in person can watch both nights live on Flo Racing.
