Ray Fox (1916-2014) was an engine builder, NASCAR team owner, and inspector. Fox has 14 career NASCAR wins and 16 pole wins throughout his career in NASCAR. His family followed in his footsteps as engine builders and mechanics.
Fox is credited for building Fireball Roberts engine in 1955 for the Daytona beach course. Roberts was able to lead every lap in that event with the engine built by Fox, but was disqualified for illegal parts. In 1960, Fox built the winning Daytona 500 engine for Junior Johnson. With the engine built by Fox, Junior Johnson was able to notice the draft that we now have today at Daytona and Talladega.
In 1962, Fox began his hand at owning a team in NASCAR. Buck Baker, Buddy Baker, Darel Dieringer, Junior Johnson, Fred Lorenzen, Fireball Roberts, Cale Yarborough, and LeeRoy Yarborough drove under Fox during his tenure as a team owner. In 200 starts as an owner, he won 14 races and 16 poles. In 1972, Fox retired and sold the team to his son.
Retirement lasted for 18 years for Fox. In 1990, NASCAR came knocking on the door of Ray Fox. Ray Fox became a NASCAR Inspector. He retired from that role in 1996.
Ray Fox was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, right outside of Talladega Superspeedway, in 2003. He was a member of the Jacksonville Raceway Hall of Fame, National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame, Oceanside Rotary Hall of Fame, and Western Auto Mechanics Hall of Fame.
