Dominic Scelzi captured a runner-up result and two top 10s last Saturday to cap a busy weekend at Kings Speedway.
“Over the last few weeks we’ve gotten better and started honing in on getting more speed in the race car,” he said. “I think we’re on the right track and we competed to win two of the three races last weekend so that’s a real positive.”
The weekend began on Friday with a Sprint Car Challenge Tour event. Scelzi qualified sixth quickest and he won a heat race to advance into the dash. He gained a position to finish third, garnering the inside second row starting position in the Cotton Classic main event.
“We ended up starting on the outside of the front row when one of the cars couldn’t start,” he said. “The outside wasn’t the place to be and I fell to fifth on the first lap. I worked my way back to third and I ran first and second down. I passed for second and was right there with the leader with about six laps to go. A lapped car stalled in front of me and I had nowhere to go. I hit it and it knocked me completely off the track.”
The contact resulted in a DNF for Scelzi, who returned to the dirt oval on Saturday for the Morrie Williams Memorial with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series. Scelzi was ninth quickest in qualifying before he moved from third to second place in a heat race. He also advanced a position in the dash to end fifth.
“We went fifth to second in the first feature and just wasn’t able to track down the leader,” he said. “We were close, just not able to do anything. I was very happy with a second-place result.”
The second feature was inverted and Scelzi hustled from 16 th to seventh.
“We drove up to seventh and had a really good run,” he said. “Honestly, we were just good everywhere. We could run the bottom, the middle and the top. The track was very good in the second feature. I think we finished third in the overall points deal.”
The solid weekend gives Scelzi momentum as he ventures to Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., this Saturday for the Chris & Brian Faria Memorial with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series and the Sprint Car Challenge Tour.
