Hagar Gearing Up for Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway

Derek Hagar is heading to Lucas Oil Speedway this weekend to tackle the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.

The marquee event at the dirt oval in Wheatland, Mo., has shifted to POWRi 410 Outlaw Sprint Series sanctioning. That gives Hagar, who is driving for Paul Hart, a unique opportunity to win in three different divisions during the event.

Hagar earned ASCS National Tour 360ci winged sprint car triumphs during the event finale in 2014 as well as the two preliminary nights in 2021. He swept both nights of the 410ci non-wing sprint car portion in 2015.

“I’m pretty pumped up being the only one who’s won the winged and non-wing finale,” he said. “Hopefully we can be the only one who has done all three divisions at the end of this weekend. There’s been a lot of good cars there and a lot of good drivers that have won one but not the other so it’s something I take a lot of pride in.

“There’s a particular line at that track that fits my driving style that other people haven’t been able to hit. That helps us shine. No matter where we start we’ve been able to find our way to the front. Hopefully it will be the same in the 410. This will be my first time running a 410 winged show there. I hope I can adapt quick and by Saturday we can have it dialed in to get the results we’re used to getting there.”

Hagar and Hart competed in the 27 th annual Queens Royal and Terry Babb Tribute last Saturday at Farmington Empire Speedway. A run from sixth to third place in a heat race locked Hagar into the 14 th starting position in the main event. The night ended early with a 21st-place result, which marked only the sixth time he hasn’t finished in the top 10 this season.

“The track wasn’t the greatest and there were a lot of technical difficulties,” he said. “I don’t want to be negative so we’ll just say it wasn’t worth the drive.”
