Jordon Mallett drove to a pair of podiums last weekend during a USCS Series doubleheader in Alabama.
The strong showing gives him six straight top fives and seven podiums in his last nine races.
“It was another solid weekend,” he said. “We’ve been putting ourselves in a good spot. We podiumed each night, but there was more to be desired.”
The weekend began on Saturday when Mallett made his debut at Buckshot Speedway in Clanton. He advanced from fifth to third place in a heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the fourth row in the main event. Mallett advanced to a third-place result, which was his 10 th top five of the season. It also garnered the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
“Things didn’t quite go in our favor and we clawed our way onto the podium,” he said. “We had a poor draw in the wrong heat race and didn’t get to make the dash. That put us a long way back in the feature. We spent too much time trying to move forward instead of starting toward the front. It took too long to get through the cars and toward the front. We had more if we could have just started up there. Passing was definitely at a premium.”
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday at Talladega Short Track, where a heat race win from the third starting position moved Mallett into the dash. However, because of time constraints, the dash was cancelled and Mallett pulled the No. 2 pill to start the main event on the outside of the front row.
“We unloaded a really good race car and had a good draw and a good heat race,” he said. “We were second highest in points and they actually scrapped the dash because we had been in a rain delay earlier in the night. The track was super racy in our heat races, but by the time we got to the feature the inside line took off a whole lot better than the outside. The track wasn’t conducive to passing and we just weren’t quite good enough to get by the leader. They were going to have to make a mistake for us to get there and we never got into thick traffic where it broke the momentum, but you can’t hang your head on a weekend with a pair of podiums.”
Mallett’s second-place result was his eighth podium outing of the season.
He is taking this weekend off before joining the ASCS National Tour Sept. 13-14 at Arrowhead Speedway in Colcord, Okla., during the Green Country 50.
