Wigal leads McIntosh in Toyota 1-2 Finish in USAC at Angell Park

Rookie Zach WIgal took the lead on lap five and then held off a late charge by fellow Toyota driver Cannon McIntosh to earn his first USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series victory on night one of the Firemen’s Nationals at Angell Park Speedway Sunday.

Wigal’s win marks the sixth for CB Industries this season and he becomes the sixth different Toyota driver to win in the first 12 USAC events in 2024.

Wigal began the night starting from the third position, but quickly moved up to second on lap two and then closed on leader Zach Daum. He’d catch Daum on lap five, running around him on the outside of turn four to take over the top spot.

Behind Wigal, McIntosh would climb from the fifth starting position up to third by lap four and used a lap eight restart to pass Daum for the second spot.

From that point on, the race would run caution-free for the final 23 laps as Wigal would pull away from the field. As the race went on, McIntosh’s pace increased and he would use lapped traffic to close on the leader. His late run would fall just short, though, as Wigal would take the checkered flag winning by 0.692 seconds ahead of McIntosh and 4.122 seconds ahead of third-place Logan Seavey.

Wigal’s CB Industries teammate and series point leader Daison Pursley would finish fifth to give Toyota three of the top-five finishers on the night. Toyota-powered drivers would also claim positions six through ten with Ryan Timms placing sixth followed by Gavin Miller, Jacob Denney, Jade Avedisian and Justin Grant.

The USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series is back at Angell Park Speedway for night two of the Firemen’s Nationals on Monday night.

Toyota Quotes:

Zach Wigal, CB Industries Toyota:“This is just so awesome. Some kids dream of winning a Super Bowl, my dream was to be standing right here. I’m so thankful that Chad Boat gave me such a great car and that Dave Nos gave me the opportunity to live my dream. Running the Badger (Midget) race helped a lot. The bottom went away at the end of the Badger race and I knew that before everybody else and that helped a lot. I’m so blessed to be here.

Cannon McIntosh, KKM Toyota: “I feel like I’ve always had really good speed here (Angell Park), we’ve had some problems here in the past and it really just hasn’t been my friend. It all starts with having a really good race car and right out of the gate we had one. The KKM really had it dialed in. I feel like I fired off really good right away. I started off right behind Zach and I didn’t get cleared quite as kick as he did, but I still felt like I got through quick. It was just hold it wide open from there and try to run him down. I adjusted my line in the middle of the race and that’s when I began to run him down. Thank you to Toyota, Gearwrench, Mobil 1, K1 Racegear and all the people that make this happen.I’ll just try to be a little better and go get them tomorrow.”
