Big Game Motorsports is heading into another crown jewel event with momentum.
The team ventures to Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, this week to tackle the 63 rd annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s, which runs from Wednesday through Saturday. It’s an event David Gravel, whose preliminary night is Wednesday, won in 2019. He’s guided the team to a second-place finish each of the last two years, including a run from the 22 nd starting position last season.
“We have high expectations,” he said. “We have to keep checking boxes off the list and take it one race at a time. It starts with having a good prelim night. If you start in that invert in the feature you know you’re in a really good position to have a lot of points. That’s what the event is all about – putting yourself in position.”
Gravel has produced a top-two result at the marquee event, which showcases 100-plus of the top sprint car drivers in the country, during three of the last four years. He won a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series race at Knoxville Raceway in June for his 12 th career 410ci winged sprint car victory at the track. Additionally, Gravel, who leads the World of Outlaws with 13 series triumphs this year, is 2-for-2 this season in six-figure races as he earned his first career Kings Royal title and he won the Joker’s Jackpot last month.
“There’s highs and lows in racing,” he said. “Luckily, we’ve had more highs this year. Every year has been pretty good. Right now we’re on another level as a race team and we’re firing on all cylinders.”
The team is coming off a pair of top-10 finishes during the Ironman 55 hosted by Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 during the weekend.
Gravel timed in seventh quickest in his group both nights. He placed fourth in a heat race on Friday and third on Saturday. Gravel advanced from 13 th to seventh in the feature on Friday and from 10 th to sixth in the A Main on Saturday.
He is currently leading the World of Outlaws championship standings by 90 points.
