Dominic Scelzi rebounded in a big way last Saturday during the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series portion of the 33 rd annual Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial.
Scelzi, who ended 16 th following a late incident on Friday to open the doubleheader at Placerville Speedway, charged from 17 th to third on Saturday for his seventh top five of the season.
“I was definitely happy with our speed,” he said. “We were consistently one of the fastest cars throughout the weekend.”
Scelzi kicked off Saturday’s show by qualifying ninth quickest in his group. He then finished where he started – fifth – in a heat race to lock into the 17 th starting position in the A Main.
“I didn’t do a very good job qualifying,” he said. “I got myself plugged into the curb too hard both laps and that cost us. On the first lap in the heat race cars on the front row crashed and I had nowhere to go. It wiped my front end out. We got that repaired and got back to fifth. Then we had a really good car in the main event. Every move we made worked. I was kind of everywhere. I was on the berm off turn two or way up against the curb. In turns three and four I was all over, pretty much running anywhere the guy in front of me wasn’t. It was a fun race.”
The run from 17 th to third earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
The weekend started on Friday with Scelzi qualifying seventh quickest in his group. He hustled from third to win a heat race, advancing into the Sprint Car Challenge Tour dash. An eighth-place result in the dash lined him up on the outside of the fourth row in the main event.
“I got to fifth when a guy got over the cushion in turn two with about 10 laps to go,” he said. “I was going to plow him so I spun myself out to try to avoid him. We restarted at the back and got a couple of positions to end up 16th. I felt pretty good before that. We were a fourth or fifth-place car. It wasn’t easy to get going, but I felt we were decent. We just had some misfortune.”
Scelzi plans on driving for Willie Kahne this Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash.
“We’re going up there for Trey’s wife’s baby shower,” Scelzi said of good friend and fellow racer Trey Starks. “I talked to Willie and he said, ‘Why don’t you drive my car?’ I was all for it. I’m looking forward to this weekend.”
