IMSA Adds Semiconductor Manufacturer AMD as Proud Supplier

The job of officiating IMSA races relies on receiving accurate and instant information from a variety of sources. That job just became more efficient with the addition of the North American race sanctioning body’s newest partner, AMD.

AMD, the high performance and adaptive computing leader based in Santa Clara, California, has signed a multi-year agreement to become an International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) Proud Supplier. Under the agreement, AMD will provide its EPYC™ and Ryzen™ processors for servers and laptops, respectively, powering IMSA Race Control – the system used to officiate IMSA events.

IMSA Race Control employs a software system that integrates camera, radio, telemetry and GPS elements to monitor IMSA practice, qualifying and race sessions in real time, allowing accurate and timely officiating of events. With as many as 80 cameras at the tracks synchronized with the timing and scoring loops, the volume of unstructured video and structured timing data generated during an endurance race requires a substantial amount of compute power. AMD powered servers and laptops enable IMSA to manage this unprecedented volume of data to efficiently run the various racing series.

“Operating an effective race officiating system requires the most capable hardware to run advanced software,” said IMSA Senior Director of Systems Technology, David McSpadden. “By partnering with AMD and relying on their state-of-the-art processors, we can ensure that the software that IMSA uses runs efficiently and enables the Race Control team to make informed decisions as every IMSA race unfolds. We welcome AMD to the group of IMSA Proud Suppliers.”

“High performance and sustainability are hallmark characteristics of both IMSA sports car racing and AMD along with providing a great customer experience,” said Kumaran Siva, corporate vice president, Strategic Business Development, AMD. “With IMSA having partnerships with 18 global automotive OEMs, many of which already use AMD technology, our participation as a proud supplier partner is a tremendous way to showcase the automotive technologies available from AMD.”
