“Shugah’” Shane Sexton Out Early in Usac/Cra Main at Perris – Sets Return for the Salute to Indy

Jonesing to get back into a sprint car, “Shugah’” Shane Sexton struck a deal to drive a Perkins Motorsports entry when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars took to the track last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway. While things did not end up the way he wanted, he had a “great time.” Plans now call for him to return to the cockpit in his own GAS Chassis Co. sprint car when the series returns to Perris for the annual Salute to Indy on May 25th.

While waiting for his 410 engine to be repaired, Sexton saw a Kenny Perkins post on Facebook offering a ride in one of the Perkins Motorsports cars last Saturday night. A deal was quickly struck and like his lightning sprint car expeditions in recent years, “Shugah’” arrived suitcase in hand to wheel the Maxim chassis 360 offered by Perkins.

The effervescent driver from Warner Springs, California was making his third appearance in the USAC/CRA Series this year. Unfortunately, the first two were plagued by engine problems. Hopefully, those problems will fade in the rearview mirror by the time of the Salute to Indy. The pistons arrived last week and the engine is going together now.

Last Saturday Sexton qualified 21st and placed seventh in his heat while getting used to the Perkins ride. Unfortunately, he was part of a four-car tangle on the 22nd lap of the main event and his car was done for the night with a 21st-place finish.

While he wished things had went better in the main, Sexton had high praise for Kenny Perkins and shared them on his Facebook page.

“Super fun weekend, thanks to Kenny Perkins for the ride. Probably the first time I have been in a sprint car without a single stress other than not seriously hurting the car. If anyone wants to drive this car, hit up Kenny as it is one of his school cars that they bring to the track and let you drive it at Perris.”

“That was seriously one of the most laid back and fun times we’ve had since racing sprint cars,” Sexton’s father Stan added.

This Saturday, May 4th, Sexton will be at Perris Auto Speedway as an interested spectator for Night of Destruction Presented by LKQ Pick Your Part. His father’s girlfriend, Louise Belchero, will make her racing debut in the Mighty Mini Stock Class. She will don all of Shane’s safety gear for the event. Spectator gates to see how the newcomer fares in her first race will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first green flag is at 7:00.
