Where did he come from? Thomas Toffel surprises the competition in Valencia

The 2024 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series season started with a blast and one driver was a particularly positive surprise in both EuroNASCAR divisions: Thomas Toffel. The Swiss is pulling double duty for Race Art Technology and the Circuit Ricardo Tormo revealed his true performance at the wheel of the #34 Chevrolet. Toffel fought for the top spots in EuroNASCAR 2 and also performed well in EuroNASCAR PRO where he topped the Challenger Trophy in both races. His strong results allowed the Swiss team to win the Endurance Teams Championship race with a total race time of 1:58:09.994 hours across all four races and 40 points on the account.

A veteran on motorbikes, Toffel made his EuroNASCAR debut back in the 2023 season. The 33-year-old adapted quickly to the V8 beasts without any electronic aids but it seems that the Swiss made significant steps in the right direction over the winter to improve his pace and race craft. A meticulous preparation was the key for Toffel to fight for top spots in both championships in Valencia. He spent a lot of time testing at the Spanish venue and clocking laps in his simulator.

“There are no secrets,” said Toffel on the keys to his success in 2024. “I was here during the winter, so I practiced a lot on this track. At the beginning of the weekend it was difficult because the temperature between the winter training and now is totally different, so I had to improve and work to get a good feeling. I also drove on the simulator during the winter and it helped me a lot. I hope that I take the next step and I can be at the front for all the races.”

In the end, Toffel finished first in the Challenger Trophy in the first EuroNASCAR PRO race of the season on Saturday. He beat his fellow class competitors Max Lanza and Dario Caso, who joined him on the special classification’s podium. Toffel gained even more momentum with a strong fourth place in Saturday’s EuroNASCAR 2 race. On Sunday, he made the perfect sweep in the Challenger Trophy by finishing in seventh overall ahead of Lanza and Caso. In EuroNASCAR 2, he rounded out a strong season opening race weekend in fourth overall.

The 2024 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series season continues with the NASCAR GP Italy at Autodromo di Vallelunga on May 18-19. Qualifying and all races will be broadcast live on EuroNASCAR’s YouTube channel and several TV channels from all around the world.
