Rohrbaugh scores first career Super Cup win at Jennerstown Speedway

Codie Rohrbaugh picked up his first-ever Super Cup Stock Car Series win at Jennerstown (PA) Speedway Saturday night.  Rohrbaugh was locked in a hard-fought battle with JJ Pack in the closing laps and held on to the victory.

“It was great,” Rohrbaugh said of the racing.  “He’s a great driver.  We race clean and race hard.  You gotta love that”

The 20-year-old driver tested at the Jennerstown track Friday in preparation for Saturday’s race.

“I like the long sweeping turns,” he said.  “Once you get a car to rotate, you’ll be very fast here.”

Rohrbaugh went from running a K&N East car at the 1.058 mile New Hampshire Motor Speedway on July 11 to a Super Cup car at the ½ mile Jennerstown Speedway on Friday and Saturday.

After Saturday night’s race, Pack still unofficially holds the points lead in Super Cup and tried to use the high line to get beside the 2013 Super Cup Rookie of the Year.

“I knew I was gonna run on the outside,” Pack said. “Already practiced it a few times to see if the car would stick.  Five laps to go, I drove it in there.”

The Virginia driver won last time out at CNB Raceway Park in Clearfield, Pennsylvania on June 28 and enjoyed racing again at Jennerstown.

“I love this track,” he added.  “When I ran Pro Cup here, I was always up in the top-10 and I enjoy this track so much so I had good, high hopes of it.”

Rohrbaugh led flag-to-flag, but the race wasn’t handed to him.  He drove out to an eight-second lead at one point before vanishing on lap 45, when the No. 69 car Chris Wenzel had problems on the track.

Howie Conk started to slowly reel in Rohrbaugh by chopping a few seconds off his lead before the caution.

Conk made a dive-bomb move on Rohrbaugh in turn one a few laps after the restart and lost control of his No. 28 car and put it in the wall to end his night.

“I kinda thought he (Conk) overdrove it, that’s why I backed out of the corner” Rohrbaugh said. “I knew he had to wash up.”

It was Conk’s first start on the Super Cup circuit since Columbus last June.

Kevin Kromer came in third, while Jeff Zillweger and Bill Ashton rounded out the top five.

The Super Cup Stock Car Series heads next to Midvale Speedway in Ohio on Saturday, August 9.
