Brodie Takes Pole Position for Iowa Speedway and Races Hard

Brodie Kostecki, 16, from Perth, Australia, won his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series pole in Saturday’s qualifying for Casey’s General Store 150 at Iowa Speedway.

Kostecki posted a lap of 23.666 seconds in his No. 43 Arcoplate Toyota around the .875-mile oval for an average speed of 133.102 mph. His previous best qualifying run in eight previous series starts was fourth in the season opener at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway.

It was the 10th meeting at Iowa between the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West.

Starting from the front row, Brodie had his best run of his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East career going in Saturday’s race, as he led laps and was in second place in the first half of the 150 lap race. Shortly after the halfway break, Brodie was running fifth when a multi-car crash happened in front of him and there was nowhere to go.

We had a really good car the first half,” said Kostecki, “We were pretty much the only ones that could run with the 41 (winner Ben Rhodes) consistently throughout the whole run.  We led all those laps at the start, but the car started to get a bit too free.  I was able to fix that by moving up the track and was going really well until the break.”

Brodie was credited with a 33rd-place finish, but that doesn’t reflect the strength of his run. His first career pole in the K&N Pro Series, laps led and a lot of momentum built up with new crew chief Walter Giles has Brodie pumped up to move forward with the 2014 season.

“The car was handling beautifully.  It was the best car I’ve ever had in this series.  Even though the car’s wrecked, I’m still really proud of the guys, my new crew chief Walter Giles and everyone involved in getting this car as good as it was today.  How good we ran in qualifying and how good it was during the race gives us a lot of positive things to move forward with.  There are some tweaks still to be made, but for just our first week working with Walter, I’m pretty impressed with how things went.”
