Darkness foiled David Ragan’s attempt for a late comeback Tuesday night at the Milwaukee Mile, handing him a ninth-place finish just as he was pushing toward the front. The No. 77 Skuttle Tight Ford had just entered the top 10 as daylight faded at the one-mile track, forcing officials to cut the Swiss Colony Howie Lettow Memorial 150 to just 115 laps.
The Midwest Tour-sanctioned race had started late due to rain, giving the field of 43 drivers the added challenge of not knowing how many laps they would get in before dusk.
Ragan started 17th and passed his way into the top 10 in the early laps of the race. But his No. 77 ran over some debris during a Lap 40 caution and cut a tire, forcing him to pit and fall to the back of the pack.
Not to be held back for long, Ragan charged back up to 14th by the half-way break and into the top 10 by Lap 96. He had momentum on his side but time working against him.
With darkness setting in, officials called for the race to end on Lap 115, and Ragan had to take the ninth-place finish as the checkers flew with Kyle Busch in the lead.
Comments from David Ragan after the Lettow 150:
“Our Skuttle Tight Ford was fast. We ran a lot of laps and passed a lot of cars. If we had run the full 150 laps, I’m pretty sure we would’ve had a top-five car. I don’t think we’d have had anything for Kyle, but we had a pretty good run going and definitely could’ve done more than ninth.
“But it was fun. For only running four of five of these races a year, I think we were pretty competitive. It was a fun race, our friends from Skuttle Tight were here to enjoy it, and I’m proud of our effort. ”
