Taco Bell Team Set Sights on Michigan

David Gilliland and the No. 34 Taco Bell Ford team are looking forward to another big track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit. Despite having a best finish of 17th in his nine starts at Michigan International Speedway, Gilliland likes the low-banked, two-mile track. The team has improved its intermediate track program and is looking forward to taking full advantage during the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dip 400 on Sunday.

The team is coming off of a 29th-place finish at Pocono Raceway. The Taco Bell Ford Fusion was fast all afternoon, but Gilliland fell off the lead lap when the yellow flag waved during one of the team’s green-flag pit stops.

Comments from Taco Bell driver David Gilliland on Michigan International Speedway:

“We’ve kind of switched our set-up stuff around, some of the front-end geometry stuff and I’m actually looking forward to going to Michigan and seeing how it works there. So, we’ve found some stuff at some of the flatter tracks this year and I’m excited about going back there. We’ve never really ran super good there, so hopefully, we’ll have a better package going there this year.

“It really is like we had to start from scratch with these new cars. We worked hard last year to build a notebook and make progress and get better when we’d return to some of these tracks for a second time. And we did. But this year, like I said, it’s like we’re starting over. Our new fleet of cars, with the new nose that NASCAR implemented this year, is pretty different. So, we might be able to take some of last year’s stuff into consideration, but we’re also looking back more so at similar tracks we already ran this year and using that information.

“It would be good to have a nice run for Ford. This is a ‘home’ race for them. We’ll be spending more time with everybody at Ford this weekend. We’ll meet with some of their employees, and see what they’ve got in the works for next year, probably test-drive some new models of cars that are coming out. They’re a good partner and it’ll be good to get to spend some time with them. And then hopefully we can end the weekend with a good run for them on Sunday.
