Big Game Motorsports and Gravel Win Big Events and Contend for World of Outlaws Title During Impressive Season
Big Game Motorsports produced a stellar season that was highlighted by more than a dozen feature victories and a runner-up result in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series championship standings.
David Gravel guided the team to 12 World of Outlaws wins - a series best - as well as a $50,000-to-win High Limit Sprint Car Series triumph.
"Big picture, it was a great year," he said. "We had a lot of car speed and we were able to challenge for a lot of wins. We ran up front in almost all of the big races. We had a charge at the Knoxville Nationals (from 22 nd to second) and our High Limit win was big stuff. Winning at Devil's Bowl during the last race there was meaningful. We dealt with three DNFs and felt we still gave ourselves a chance at the end of the year.
"I know we had a lot of things happen. There's about six nights we had some stuff happen to us that really hurt our performance. The 24th-place finish in blowing a tire at Jackson Motorplex and me crashing at U.S. 36 Raceway, which was my fault. And we had a part failure and finished at the back at Haubstadt. You have to learn from your mistakes and try to get better as a driver.
I was proud of us continuing to put our heads down and go to work."
The season began on a hot note as Gravel captured the first two and three of the first five World of Outlaws races - all at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. He was also victorious during Outlaws events at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill.; at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D.; at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa; at Huset's Speedway in Brandon, S.D.; at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis.; at BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven, Pa.; at Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, N.Y.; at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas; and at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C.
The team earned the biggest payout in sprint car racing history at the time and in World of Outlaws history on June 24 during the $250,000-to-win 2 nd annual BillionAuto.com Huset's High Bank Nationals presented by MENARDS at Huset's Speedway. The $50,000 High Limit victory occurred on Sept. 26 at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa.
"We started off the year really, really good at Volusia," he said. "It was an awesome start. The Devil's Bowl win, being the final race ever at that track, and winning at Lernerville, beating Kyle (Larson) and Brad (Sweet) for $50,000 stand out. The Huset's High Bank Nationals in front of the Billion Automotive guys and at Tod's track, being the highest paid event in World of Outlaws history, was really, really cool. There were a lot of cool moments. And we had a lot of good seconds, too. I think we finished second 18 times.
"We were consistently up front. I know we were in the top five over 50 percent of the time. It's been a great year and we're definitely proud of what we're building and proud of the future."
This year marked the first time Gravel has led the World of Outlaws in victories. It also marked his third straight second-place finish in the championship standings and seventh podium in the last eight years.
The dozen World of Outlaws triumphs were the second most wins in a season for Gravel, who also posted his most top fives in a season. He led the series in heat race wins and podium results. Gravel ranked second in top 10s, in Quick Time Awards and in dash appearances.
The team will return to World of Outlaws full-time competition in 2024.

Hagar Enjoys Dream Season Producing Career-Best 20 Victories
Derek Hagar reached new heights this season, winning a career-best 20 sprint car main events to accomplish a goal he dreamed of achieving.
"To have such a strong season and finish with 20 wins is pretty remarkable," he said. "It's going to be hard to top that. Not knowing what the year was going to be and we got a late start in the season, so to be able to get to that 20-win mark was unbelievable. Everything just lined out. The season started out phenomenally."
Hagar won his sprint car season opener for the first time since 2014 and followed by capturing each of his first nine races of the season. He was leading his 10 th feature when he was crashed by a fellow competitor he was attempting to put a lap down, snapping his career-best nine race winning streak.
It didn't take long for Hagar to return to Victory Lane, which was the theme of the season as he finished with the 20 triumphs in 31 sprint car starts. Additionally, Hagar was victorious with all four teams he drove for this season.
"If you look at it stats-wise, two of those owners I have a perfect win record," he said. "Both times we ran Paul Hart's car we won and in Chad Jones' car at the end of the year we won with that. I think we only lost one or two shows in the McCord Farms car. And in our personal car we won a lot of races. We aligned ourselves with good car owners so to be competitive with every car we got in was rewarding."
Hagar won the Grassroots Nationals, Fall Nationals and King of Memphis, but it was a Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions victory - his first ever - on July 26 at Benton Speedway in Benton, Mo., that stands out.
"The biggest win of the year was the All Star win," he said. "We weren't even supposed to be racing that weekend. It was a last-minute deal. I was just going to watch. To come out and be able to qualify second and have a good run in the heat race set us up. We moved forward in the dash and then we had a really good car and passed some really good drivers to pick up the feature win. I woke up the next morning and thought I was dreaming. It was a lot to take in and seemed too good to be true."
Hagar also swept the USCS Series Speedweek for six of his series-best nine victories.
"That was a pretty big deal," he said. "It'd never been done before. There were eight or nine drivers who could win every night."
Hagar also bookended his season with wins in his season opener and season finale for the first time.
"It was a dream season from start to finish," he said. "I want to thank everyone who is part of our team. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish next year."

Katie Hettinger Scores First Carolina Pro Late Model Series Win; Becomes First Female to Win in Carolina Pro Late Model Series History
Katie Hettinger scored another win this past Saturday at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway and earned another first in a career full of firsts.
When the 16-year-old racer from Dryden, Michigan, crossed the finish line in first place, .453 of a second ahead of runner-up Max Reaves in the Nov. 11 Cook Out 100, Hettinger had her first victory in the Carolina Pro Late Model Series and became the series’ first female winner.
“Going into the race I knew I just had to be patient and smart,” said Hettinger, who clocked her fastest lap on the penultimate lap of the 100-lap feature. “I was able to get a good jump on the last restart and then I used all of the track going into (turn) one and all the way into (turn) three to get around a car on my outside. I just had to focus on my laps and hit my marks. My crew was talking me through those last few laps and we were able to bring it home.”
As Hettinger blazes her own racing trail with an eye on the upper divisions of NASCAR, she simultaneously serves as a pioneer, smashing glass ceilings and creating opportunities for others. When it comes to firsts, Hettinger has earned many since she began racing quarter midgets at age 5.
- Won the 2020 Champion Racing Association (CRA) Junior Late Model Series title to become the first and only female champion in CRA history.
- In the span of two weeks in September 2021, Hettinger became the youngest female race winner at Hickory when she won the 50-lap Limited Late Model feature Sept. 4 as part of the Bobby Isaac Memorial event. She then became Hickory’s youngest female Late Model race winner on Sept. 18 when she won the track’s 75-lap feature.
- Hettinger won four more Late Model races at Hickory in 2022 to become the track’s winningest female racer.
- Kicked off 2023 by winning on night seven of the acclaimed World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway, becoming the first female to win a Pro Late Model feature during the World Series and the first driver from Michigan to win a Pro Late Model race.
“The Carolina Pro Late Model Series is a really good stepping-stone division before running the CARS Tour,” said Hettinger, who ran the full CARS Pro Late Model Tour this year. “It’s a good place to race, whether you’re male or female. I’m there to compete and win races, just like all the other guys.”
In June, fresh off her 16th birthday, Hettinger earned her driver’s license. Four months later, she secured rookie-of-the-year honors on the CARS Pro Late Model Tour by being one of the series’ most consistent drivers. She finished second in the championship standings and her 11 top-10 finishes tied that of series champion, Caden Kvapil.
“Saturday was my first time driving a car with my new team and, hopefully, it showed a little preview of how next year will go.”
Hettinger will return to her family-run team, Hettinger Racing, in 2024, where a heavy slate of Pro Late Model and Late Model Stock races, across a variety of racing series, await.
“It’s definitely fun to be working with my dad and all the guys on the team,” Hettinger said. “Jason Stanley is my crew chief and he used to race Limited Late Model, so he’s a really good guy to work with because he knows so much and has a driver’s perspective. I feel like we understand each other really well, and this win at Hickory is proof of that.”
While plans are already in place for 2024, Hettinger isn’t done with 2023. She will be back in her race-winning No. 71 Chevrolet for the South Carolina 400 this Saturday at Florence Motor Speedway and again on Nov. 26 for the Thanksgiving Classic at Southern National Motorsports Park in Lucama, North Carolina. Both races will host a who’s who of racing talent based off the early entry list for the South Carolina 400, which features NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr., and soon-to-be 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year title contender Josh Berry among a host of prominent Late Model champions and race winners.
“It’s a big deal on two fronts,” said Hettinger about the South Carolina 400 and Thanksgiving Classic. “There are guys who have a ton of experience who have obviously accomplished a lot, so you learn a lot just by being on the same track with them. And, of course, guys like Dale bring a ton of media exposure. It’s a good opportunity for short-track drivers to show their skills to a wider audience.”
The South Carolina 400 will be streamed live on FloRacing and sign up is HERE. FloRacing is also available on Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast and Apple TV. Streaming for the Thanksgiving Classic is in the midst of being finalized and once completed details will be available on Southern National’s website and Facebook page.

Nasse Wins FL Governor’s Cup
In 2010, a then 15-year-old Stephen Nasse was passed by David Rogers with just three laps to go in his first Florida Governor’s Cup start at New Smyrna Speedway for the win. It was all for naught however, as he was disqualified in post-race tech for a body infraction.
13 years and 13 starts later, the Florida native finally checked off the marquee Super Late Model race in his home state by winning the Florida Governor’s Cup. After starting from the rear with a power steering issue, Nasse drove through the field twice and held off NASCAR Cup Series driver and Anthony Campi Racing teammate William Byron in the final laps before the Hendrick Motorsports driver fell out of the race with four to go after losing oil pressure.
Fellow Florida veterans Anthony Sergi and Jesse Dutilly rounded out the podium.
2024 ASA STARS National Tour Season Opener Announced
During pre-race ceremonies at the Florida Governor’s Cup on Sunday, it was announced that the second ASA STARS National Tour season will kick off at New Smyrna Speedway on Tuesday, February 13th during the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing in the Clyde Hart Memorial.

The event honoring track founder Clyde Hart was first contested in 1999 during the summer, but was moved to the World Series in 2022 and opened the ASA Southern Super Series points season in 2023.

Toyota Dirt Driver Spotlight - Gavin Miller
Toyota Dirt Driver Spotlight
Gavin Miller
Keith Kunz Motorsports - Toyota Bullet by Spike
Age: 16
Hometown: Allentown, PA
Gavin Miller kicks off the six-race West Coast swing of the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series season in position to clinch the series Rookie of the Year title at just 16 years old. The Keith Kunz Motorsports driver was a six-time USAC National .25 Midget champion and is one of just three drivers along with teammate Ryan Timms and veteran Zach Daum to have won in all three national midget series this year.
Gavin, what would it mean to you to win USAC Midget Rookie of the Year?
GM: It would mean a lot. We’ve been pretty consistent and pretty well-rounded all year. I have to thank Pete Willoughby and Keith Kunz and everyone at KKM - and I think it would mean a lot to them as well. Just to know that we’ve run consistently well all year, it pretty special. It’s what we were shooting for when we started the year and we had pretty high expectations. Now we need to keep working toward earning that title.
What was it like getting a win in all three national midget series as a 16-year-old rookie? Had you even been to most of these tracks before this year?
GM: Not many people get the chance to say they’ve done that in their first year in a Midget, so it’s been pretty special. Most of these tracks we’ve raced at are new to me - pretty much all of the tracks other than Port City and a couple of the California tracks. Indiana Midget Week (where he won at Bloomington) was totally new to me.
You’ve earned 21 top-five and 40 top-10 finishes in 51 races between USAC and Xtreme, how have you stayed so consistent in your first full season in a midget?
GM: I think the key is just to start off the night strong. Getting a good qualifying has probably been the most important thing. Then try to get a good result in the heat race and then I just try to race everyone clean and stay out of trouble in the feature. Running a partial season last year definitely helped me learn more. The more seat time you get the more you improve. I’m just trying to give and get feedback from my guys. They’re teaching me a lot and showing me how I need to improve every race.
So how did you get started in racing and who were your heroes growing up?
GM: My dad brought me to the track one day and we saw quarter midgets racing at the fair and I told my dad that I wanted to do that. I was five at the time. Then I started racing quarter midgets at six years old in 2012. My heroes growing up were probably Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, and Donny Schatz.
How did you team up with KKM?
GM: I started out running micros with Keith. We called him up and told him we were interested in running the micros and it just grew from there.
It seems like most drivers around your age do at-home schooling, yet with a schedule of 50+ races this year, you still do in-class at your local school. How hard is that?
GM: I have to keep the grades up in order to race. It’s definitely hard to be at a race and still keep up in school when you miss all those days in class, and then you have to come back and take a test. The key is you have to let your teachers know when you’ll be leaving and get all your work done ahead of time.
What’s your long-term goal in racing?
GM: I’m just trying to take it one day at a time and stay focused on what I’m racing right now. Eventually, maybe ending up in a sprint car or even switching over to pavement.

LEGACY MOTOR CLUB™ today named Ben Beshore as the crew chief for John Hunter Nemechek, who recently signed on to drive the Club’s No. 42 Toyota NASCAR Cup Series entry in 2024.
Beshore, 42, has proven success in every series he has worked within. The York, Pa., native began his career in NASCAR shortly after earning an engineering degree from Virginia Tech. He joined Roush Fenway Racing, (now RFK), in 2007 as a race engineer. He moved over to Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) in 2014, to become the race engineer for NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch until 2018. In 2019, Beshore moved to the JGR Xfinity Series team where he worked with multiple drivers as the crew chief for the No. 18 series entry and then the No. 20 Toyota with driver Harrison Burton.
In 2021, Beshore was promoted to the NASCAR Cup Series to work as the crew chief for Kyle Busch. The duo won their first race of the season for JGR – the exhibition Busch Clash at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. His success with Busch includes three series wins, 23 top-five, and 39 top-10 finishes in 71 races. In 2023, Beshore became the Xfinity Series crew chief for the young John Hunter Nemechek at JGR.
“I’m excited to join LEGACY MOTOR CLUB and continue working with John Hunter in the Cup Series - we had so much success last season. I’m looking forward to helping build this program into a perennial contender that can compete at the highest level possible each and every week.”
Nemechek agrees his chemistry with Beshore will continue to breed future success.
“The partnership between driver and crew chief requires a type of chemistry that is hard to find,” said Nemechek. “As a driver, if you're lucky enough to find a crew chief that you mesh with as well as Ben and I do, you do everything possible to stick together. I look forward to building on our competitive partnership and fighting for more wins and championships.”
If anyone knows how important chemistry is with a crew chief, its Jimmie Johnson.
“The driver-crew chief relationship is something I know well and it's such an important part of the performance foundation,” said Johnson. “We are so thankful to see Ben join the Club. His experience with John Hunter and Toyota will help us with the transition and his on-track experience will elevate us in so many ways. I have learned that Ben is a highly focused person and that he believes in the future potential of an organization that is going through a lot of change. He’s a great fit.”
Beshore’s role within the organization is effective immediately.

Pocono Raceway Pivots to 2024: Ticket Offers Announced, More Enhancements to Fan Experience
Pocono Raceway is not resting on its laurels after coming off its sold-out 2023 NASCAR Cup Series race and recently being named the “2023 Event of the Year” by the Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association for its record-setting race weekend.
The “Tricky Triangle” has initiated several fan enhancements for Paddock Plus and reserved camping in anticipation of its July 12-14 NASCAR weekend featuring the Cup Series, Xfinity Series and CRAFTSMAN Truck Series as well as some convenient ticket and camping offers to launch the 2024 season.
“Being named the ‘Event of the Year’ is a tribute to our great fans who pack this place and bring the unbelievable energy,” Pocono Raceway President Ben May said. “Our team is inspired and already has been busy pushing to make 2024 even better. We are going to continue to elevate the fan experience and craft ticket and camping packages that are convenient and cost effective.
“We are launching a three-race bundle starting at under $40 per day and our free camping package will return for 2024. Our fans and partners drive this sport and our desire to live the ‘More. Better. Easier.’ promise we made for this year remains in place for 2024.”
Paddock Plus enjoyed a successful debut this year and moves into the second phase of the project with a number of upgrades and additions. Paddock Plus, located directly behind the pits and across from the start/finish line, already features an elevated infield viewing area and prime access to Victory Lane activities as well as Paddock Pass+ ticket holders having pre-race access to the frontstretch and driver introductions. This phase of the project will focus on increasing the overall seating in the area, creating additional shade areas and adding more character to the footprint.
Campers also will have an enhancement coming their way as a result of Pocono Raceway selling out its entire inventory of reserved camping during this year’s race weekend. The venue will add 100 more reserved camping spots for the 2024 event as well as provide more convenience and structure overall for the camping experience.
Pocono Raceway is coming off its most successful NASCAR race weekend in more than a decade. The “Tricky Triangle” sold out its main frontstretch grandstand as well as all premium seating and suites at the Cup race for its largest race-day crowd since 2010.
The result has been increased demand with its recently concluded annual ticket renewal campaign up 20 percent in year-over-year sales.
