McCumbee, RBR Enterprises Battle to Top-20 Finish at Chicagoland

Making their return to NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) competition for the first time since Charlotte over two months ago, the “new look” RBR Enterprises team, armed with new crew chief Kevin “Cowboy” Starland and driver Chad McCumbee, battled their way to a hard-fought 20th-place finish in Saturday night’s American Ethanol 225 at Chicagoland Speedway.

“Cowboy and I are fresh in this RBR Enterprises team, and we wanted to come here to find out where we are at,” said McCumbee, who qualified 28th. “We battled with the handling of the truck for most of the weekend, but there was no harder working crew out there than our RBR Enterprises team. By the end of the race we really got the truck where it needed to be.”

A loose race truck at the beginning of the 150-lap event brought McCumbee to pit road during the race’s first caution on lap seven for a chassis adjustment and fuel. That move would prove to be beneficial as a long green flag run ensued bringing on green flag pit stops for the leaders. During the run the No. 92 Chevrolet fell two laps down, but McCumbee and team were able to stay out on the track longer than the leaders before coming in for service giving crew chief “Cowboy” Starland the chance to make a good strategy call when the caution came out on lap 72.

While the leaders came in during the yellow at the halfway point of the race, McCumbee and team elected to stay on the track and take the wave around to earn one lap back.

With several quick cautions throughout the next 50 laps, the RBR Enterprises team had several opportunities to work on the handling of their Chevrolet Silverado making improvements with each stop. On lap 111 McCumbee powered his No. 92 machine into the 22nd position, the first car one lap down to the leaders. A lap 135 caution put McCumbee in position to take the “lucky dog” award and earn his way back to the lead lap with only 15 laps remaining.

The green flag came out for final shootout to the finish, and McCumbee radioed to his crew that the truck was the best it had been all weekend long enabling him to fight his way to the 20th position by the time the checkered flag waved. The finish marks the fourth consecutive top-20 for the RBR Enterprises team who has earned top-20 finishes in all four races competed in this season.

“I am happy with our run here at Chicagoland Speedway,” said McCumbee. “We learned a lot and know what we need to do when we get back to the shop in North Carolina. I really feel like we have a lot of potential here. I’m looking forward to getting back out on the track in a few weeks.”
