NCWTS – Nemechek Wins Chevrolet Silverado 250

As part of an already busy weekend in motorsports, the 4th Annual Chevrolet Silverado 250 was NASCAR’s appetizer to tonight’s Bojangles Southern 500. The truck series’ only road-course event was originally scheduled for 64 laps but went into overtime near the end.

Cole Custer started on the pole and led 39 laps, the most of the field. If it wasn’t for different pit strategies and a wild finish, the No. 00 Haas Automation Chevrolet driver may have swept the weekend on the 2.459-mile road course. Custer’s Chase hopes also took a hit. He currently sits on the bubble in ninth place at -38. Eight drivers will move on to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoff system.

“We had a really fast truck,” Custer told FS1. “Just got taken out, he hit me going into the second-to-last corner, then hit me again.”

Custer may have just missed the checkered flag at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park but he still earned his seventh top-10 finish of the 2016 NCWTS season.

It was a battle on the final lap between Custer and John Hunter Nemechek. Just before they reached the flag stand, Nemechek gave Custer a shove that sent the two racers into the grass. Fighting for the top spot, they did not even finish on the paint of the start/finish line.  It made for a controversial finish and one NASCAR officials had to review. After film review, the driver of the No. 8 NEMCO Motorsports Chevrolet was declared the winner.

“I caught the No. 00 there. We didn’t wreck him for the win, rubbing’s racing, but if I would have been in the same spot, he would have done the same thing to me,” Nemechek explained in a FS1 post-race interview. “You have to do everything you can to get a win.”

Throughout the race, Nemechek led a total of 19 laps. With two wins now under his belt, he sits third in the Chase standings behind Matt Crafton, who came home with a fourth-place finish. After a top-10 finish, William Byron still leads the pack with five wins on the regular season.

Daniel Hemric rounded out the top three in the No. 19 DrawTite Ford. He may not have made it to Victory Lane but he’s keeping his playoff hopes alive with two regular season races left. After today, he’s unofficially holding the seventh-place Chase spot.

“We did what we wanted to do,” Hemric told FS1. “We executed all day and put ourselves into position.”

The race ran for two hours, six minutes and one second and featured six cautions. Six lead changes among five drivers were made.

The truck series takes a break before heading to Chicagoland Speedway September 16 for the American Ethanol E15 225. The race starts at 8:30 PM EST and FS1, MRN and Sirius XM Channel 90 are scheduled to have coverage.
