Even though everyone in racing knows the dangers of what we do, it’s always difficult to accept the reality of our sport when tragedy strikes. Bryan Clauson, four-time USAC National Champion, was taken from us way too soon, as a result of injuries from an accident while competing in the Belleville Nationals midget race at Belleville High Banks in Kansas.
Bryan was a tremendously talented driver. From being the youngest winner in USAC history at age 16 to racing in the Indy 500 three times, leading the race this past May. He also competed in both the NASCAR XFINITY and Sprint Cup Series, as well as Indy Lights and ARCA. If you are judged by the company you keep, Bryan was one of the best. When both Chip Ganassi and Tony Stewart ask you to drive for them, you are an elite driver.
Beyond all the talent and all the wins, the one thing that stands out in all of the eulogies, is that Bryan was one of the good guys. Always willing to take time for fans, always respectful of other drivers. He will be missed.
A memorial service in his honor will take place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at a date soon to be announced.
