John Wes Townley Pocono Recap/Texas NCWTS Preview

A day filled with errors left John Wes Townley and Athenian Motorsports saddled with a 19th-place finish in Saturday’s ARCA General Tire 200 at Pocono Raceway.

There was reason for optimism on an overcast day, despite starting ninth in a backup car. But following two speeding penalties, having a jack break during a four tire stop and running out of fuel entering Turn 1 while running third on lap 62 of 80, all Townley could do was bring the No. 05 Jive Communications Chevrolet unscathed to the finish line one lap off the pace.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been in a race where so many things went haywire,” said Townley, winner of the ARCA season-opener at Daytona in February. “Realistically, our backup car had a shot at finishing in the top five. At worst, we should have wound up in the top 10.

“Finishing 19th is just unacceptable. We’ll learn from this and be better for it down the road.”

Townley will re-direct his focus to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series during the balance of June with upcoming events at Texas Motor Speedway, Iowa Speedway and Gateway Motorsports Park.

The Watkinsville, Ga. native is especially looking forward to Friday night’s Rattlesnake 400 in Fort Worth at a track where he finished third in last summer’s Truck Series event.

“I really think the 1.5-mile tracks are my bread and butter and I feel great about the No. 05 Jive/Zaxby’s Chevrolet we’re taking to Texas,” Townley said. “We get extended practice on Thursday, so that will give us extra time to get our Silverado tuned up for Friday night.

“And I love racing under the lights in Texas. That means a lot of grip and a lot of action. This is one of my favorite races of the season. I can’t wait.”

The Rattlesnake 400 at Texas Motor Speedway will air live on Fox Sports 1 on Friday June 10th at 9 p.m. eastern.
