Corey Day’s second start in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) was cut short on Friday night at Kansas Speedway after being involved in an incident just past the halfway mark. The driver of the No. 91 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Silverado RST was credited with a 32nd-place finish after his bid for a top-10 run was cut short after 75 of 134 laps. After 19 of 23 events, the No. 91 team remains 15th in the NCTS owners’ point standings.
Day began his effort in Kansas by posting the 18th-fastest lap in qualifying, bettering the mark he set in his debut a week ago. The progressive banking and high groove at Kansas immediately playing to his strength during the race’s first segment as he quickly cracked the top-15 by lap 12. Despite a free balance in the opening laps, Day continued to march forward and gained seven positions by the end of Stage 1 on lap 30 and was scored 11th.
Crew chief Chad Norris and the HendrickCars.com team equipped Day with a set of fresh tires under the first caution. He restarted 14th on lap 38 and maintained position inside the top-15. As the run wore on, Day came to life and once again drove to 11th position by the end of Stage 2 on lap 60.
After taking another set of four tires, fuel, and a minor adjustment on his second stop, Day restart 13th on lap 69. While racing for the 11th position, Day was struck in the left rear quarter panel down the backstretch and made contact with the outside wall on lap 76. The damage sustained was terminal and forced him to retire after completing 75 laps and relegated him to a 32nd-place finish.
Corey Day Quote:
“It was good. We struggled on pit stops a little bit, lost spots, but gained them right back once we got out. I felt like I had a top-10 truck for sure. Definitely a shame. Thank you to HendrickCars.com and everyone at McAnally-Hilgemann Racing. After how we ran tonight, I’m really looking forward to Homestead in a few weeks.”
