It was a big day for the Riggs family as Layne Riggs, the son of former NASCAR Cup driver Scott Riggs, captured his first win in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in the No. 34 Truck at the Milwaukee Mile after leading 53 of the 175 laps.
“I don’t even know what to say,” Riggs said in victory lane to FOX Sports. “We’ve had a terrible year, but I’ve learned so much this year in my rookie season. I knew in practice that we had a pretty awesome truck, and I can’t be more thankful for Front Row Motorsports and everyone on the scene. We’re a family now.”
While celebrating his win, it appeared that Riggs injured himself while on top of his truck, pumping his arms in the air in front of the Milwaukee fans. Riggs with a smile on his face said, “I dislocated my shoulder because I was celebrating too hard. It hurts like a mother but it was worth it. It’s not the first time it’s happened to me, but it won’t slow me down!”
The LiUNA 175 at the Milwaukee Mile only saw two cautions during its nearly two hour stint, with the first come coming on lap 49 with the No. 21 of Jayson Alexander getting in the wall in turn three, which concluded stage one, and the second yellow coming on lap 112 for the end of stage two.
There were five lead changes with a total of four different leaders, with No. 19 of Christian Eckes leading the most laps of 71. None of the 10 playoff drivers scored the win, but Rajah Caruth in the No. 77 and Ben Rhodes in the No. 99 are the bottom two and in jeopardy of being eliminated from the playoffs.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will return on Thursday, Sept. 19 to race at the Bristol Motor Speedway, which is the second race in the first round of the Truck Series playoffs. That race will take place at 8 p.m. Eastern on FS1, MRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
