Tyler Young scores track best top-15 finish in Martinsville

Ending Friday’s final practice session third overall, Tyler Young, driver of the No. 02 Young’s Building Systems/Randco Industries Chevrolet, backed up his efforts with a track-best, ninth-place qualifying effort for Saturday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) Kroger 200 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. Young, who kept his momentum rolling through the entire race weekend, battled among the top-15 through the 200-lap event, and overcame damage sustained in a late-race caution, to finish a track-best 13th.

Being shuffled to the outside lane early on, the Midland, Texas native found himself mired in the middle of the pack, trying to fight his way forward, despite having a “tight” handling Chevrolet Silverado. Pitting under the second caution of the race, at lap 35, for four tires, fuel and a major track bar adjustment, Young restarted the race from the 17th position, looking to make up ground.

Maneuvering his No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado within the top-10, just past the halfway mark, crew chief Bryan Berry called the 25-year-old driver down pit road, under caution on lap 122, for four tires and fuel.

Restarting 12th, intensity within the field picked up, and Young found himself trapped in the middle of the pack with a Silverado that was on the “snug side.” Coming down pit road for the final time, under caution on lap 173, for fuel and a track bar adjustment only, Young was poised for the final 27 laps of the Kroger 200.

As the sophomore driver tried to work his way back through the field, Young sustained front-end damage, on lap 187 of 200, after getting together with the No. 54 machine. However, knowing how important track position was, Young declined to come down pit road to assess the damage, but rather finish the race the best he could.

Lining up 15th for the final two laps of the event, Young was able to muscle his way to a track-best 13th-place finish, behind eventual race winner, Matt Crafton.

“I just can’t be any more proud of my guys after the weekend we had. We came here, unloaded third fastest, qualified ninth and finished 13th. That’s a big accomplishment for us, to run where we did all day long. It was a typical Martinsville race though, where track position is key at the end. You just can’t give any room. We got shuffled back to 25th and raced all the way back to 13th at the end. That shows how strong our trucks are. I really wanted to get the guys a top-10, I feel like we had the truck for it. But it’s cool to be able to say that I’m upset over a 13th-place finish. It proves that this organization is moving forward.”
