Tyler Young perseveres in rain soaked Chicago

Fighting the threat of thunderstorms throughout the day Friday at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) was able to complete its lone practice session Friday morning before the skies opened up, cancelling qualifying and postponing the American Ethanol 225 until Saturday morning.

Starting the 150-lap event from the 17th position, per the NCWTS rulebook, Tyler Young, driver of the No. 02 Faro Logistics/Young’s Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado fought an ill-handling machine throughout the entirety of the race. Crew chief, Bryan Berry, brought the No. 02 machine to pit road at laps 15, 32 and 83, respectively, for adjustments to aid in a “loose” Chevrolet Silverado. It wasn’t until Berry called the Texas native to pit road on lap 95, to top off with fuel, and make a final adjustment, that Young really felt a difference in handling. With the remaining 55 laps of the American Ethanol 225 being run under green, Young and a majority of the leaders found themselves short on fuel. Running out of fuel with just two laps remaining, the 25-year-old driver pulled on to pit road for a splash of gas, relinquishing him to a 15th-place finish, three laps down to eventual race winner, John Hunter Nemechek.

“Saving fuel is always a struggle because you want to race against the other trucks on the track. It’s really hard to slow down that much honestly, but I probably could have saved a little more there at the end. I hate it for our guys who did a great job all weekend. We had a good truck, and I feel like our mile-and-a-half program keeps getting better and better. Today’s race is over with though. We’ll take this truck on to Las Vegas (Motor Speedway), and hopefully get another good finish.”
