Kyle Busch Ready to Open the Door to a Truck Series Victory at Michigan

As the old saying goes, if you keep knocking on the door eventually it will open. Kyle Busch has knocked on the door of victory at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn in each of his six career NASCAR Camping World Truck starts, but has yet to make his way in. The Las Vegas native is ready to change that on Saturday, as he takes to the 2-mile D-shaped oval in his No. 51 ToyotaCare Tundra for the Michigan National Guard 200.

Across his six Truck Series starts in the Irish Hills of Michigan, Busch has registered four top-five finishes and led at least one lap in five of the six. The 28-year-old is the career leader in laps led (149), Driver Rating (119.2) and Average Finish (5.83), but a win in NASCAR’s third division has eluded him each time.

 

Busch has posted runner-up finishes in three of his six starts, most recently in 2009 when he led a race-high 62 laps and had a comfortable lead with 24 circuits remaining when his progress was slowed by a lap truck and Colin Braun was able to work his way around him and hold on for the victory. In 2007, he led a race-high 37 laps and was out front before getting passed by Travis Kvapil with just two laps remaining. In 2005, he captured the pole, led 17 laps and was running second when a late-race caution ended the race under yellow-flag conditions with Dennis Setzer out front.

 

For Kyle Busch Motorsports, it was the same story last year when Kyle’s brother Kurt got behind the wheel of the No. 18 Tundra for the Truck Series event in the Great Lakes State. After qualifying fourth, the elder Busch was able to make his way to the front for the first time on lap 17 and ended up leading a race-high 57 laps. He remained out front on lap 79 when he surrendered the lead to make his final pit stop of the day. The race ended up going caution free the rest of the distance and several drivers, including race-winner Nelson Piquet Jr., were able to stretch fuel to the finish and Kurt was left with a disappointing ninth-place finish.

 

Last week, “Rowdy” got revenge, winning the NASCAR Sprint Sup Series race at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International after coming so close the previous two years. This week “Rowdy’s Revenge Tour” visits Michigan International Speedway, where after three runner-up finishes the talented driver is ready to open the door to a Truck Series victory at the 2-mile oval.
