CrowdStrike Racing’s whirlwind season of top-level motorsports continues this weekend as George Kurz, co-founder and CEO of CrowdStrike, returns to IMSA competition at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen at famed Watkins Glen International.


It’s the first race in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for Kurtz and CrowdStrike Racing since March’s Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. Kurtz will rejoin Jon Bennett and Colin Braun behind the wheel of the No. 54 CrowdStrike/Motul/FLEX-BOX Ligier JS P320 in the Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3) category.


This year’s Watkins Glen round will see a bigger promotional presence for CrowdStrike as it continues as an Official Partner of IMSA, the sanctioning body for the WeatherTech Championship.


The Race

Kurtz charges into Watkins Glen following three race victories this weekend at the SRO America competition at Virginia International Raceway (VIR). He now leads both the Fanatec GT World Challenge Powered by AWS and the GT America Powered by AWS championships with the next SRO race scheduled for Watkins Glen in July.


Kurtz looks to build on his earlier success this year in long-distance races. He finished third in the Rolex 24 At Daytona with CORE autosport and recorded a runner-up finish at the 24 Hours of Dubai in January. Those results built on a solid 2021 where Kurtz and CORE won in class at the Sebring 12 Hours and placed second at Watkins Glen.


“Endurance races are some of the best and most competitive events all year,” Kurtz said. “I enjoy the multi-driver, multi-class format because of the challenge it presents and the teamwork involved. Long-distance racing is a blast, but it’s even more fun at an old-school, classic track like Watkins Glen. The layout of the track tests every part of a car and driver. I’m looking forward to reuniting with Jon and Colin to see if we can climb a step higher this year at the Sahlen’s Six Hours.”


The IMSA Experience

Watkins Glen is the third round of the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup – a championship involving the four long-distance rounds on the calendar. As it did at Daytona and Sebring earlier this year, CrowdStrike will play a major role as sponsor of the Endurance, Teamwork and Speed Award for Michelin Endurance Cup events.


The honor recognizes the team in each IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship class demonstrating the unique qualities needed to be successful in long and grueling IMSA endurance races. It will be given to the team that sets the fastest time on the final lap of each Endurance Cup race with presentation of the Sebring awards taking place during Sunday’s pre-race ceremonies at Watkins Glen.


In addition to sponsoring the Endurance, Teamwork and Speed Award, CrowdStrike’s IMSA partnership will also include on-track signage at the Michelin Endurance Cup tracks (Daytona International Speedway, Sebring International Raceway, Watkins Glen International and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta) and IMSA VIP experiences at other IMSA races throughout the season.


The Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen is scheduled for 10:40 a.m. ET on Sunday, June 26. The race will stream live on Peacock with USA’s live television coverage beginning at 2 p.m. ET. IMSA Radio will air all on-track sessions at along with XM 207 and SiriusXM Online 992.

Three consecutive weekends of racing action begin today at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with the start of the 40th annual Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. Ohio’s largest annual motorsports event, The Honda Indy 200 Presented by the All-New 2023 Civic Type R, follows next weekend on July 1-3. The jam-packed stretch concludes July 8-9 with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series making its Mid-Ohio debut in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 150. 


The Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, the longest continuously-running spectator event at the track, will feature 24 races taking the green flag across tomorrow and Sunday’s schedule at the 2.258-mile, 13-turn road course in Lexington, Ohio. The Sports Car Vintage Racing Association’s (SVRA) SpeedTour will offer diverse, non-stop racing action for fans as it brings three very different types of racing series to town.


SVRA’s SpeedTour encompasses 16 races of historic SVRA action providing car enthusiasts history in motion on track and allowing fans to enjoy and reminisce on racing’s past. More modern-day racing machines will be featured in two Trans Am Series classes of ground-pounding, muscle cars. Open-wheel action from the sport’s rising stars will take place in the F4 U.S. Championship Powered by Honda and the Formula Regional Americas Championship Powered by Honda with both series staging tripleheader races.


“We're thrilled to be able to bring our fans world class racing over the next three weekends,” said Craig Rust, president of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. “From vintage race cars this weekend to INDYCAR to NASCAR, there really is something for everyone. This is truly a great time to be a race fan in Ohio.”


The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the All-New 2023 Civic Type R will again be a major part of Ohio’s Fourth of July weekend celebrations, July 1-3. On track, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES returns to Mid-Ohio for the 39th time, and all three series from the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires open-wheel development ladder also join the schedule. The Porsche Sprint Challenge North America by Yokohama and SPEED Energy Stadium Super Trucks cap off the on-track action featuring 11 total races. 


On Saturday, July 2, after the on-track activities conclude, fans and campers can enjoy a spectacular fireworks display after sunset. “Camping with Honda” also returns for campers to participate in throughout The Honda Indy 200 Presented by the All-New 2023 Civic Type R weekend. This year’s theme encourages campers to show their “Civic Spirit” and decorate their sites in patriotic red, white and blue. 


The final event of this three-weekend stretch brings the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series to Mid-Ohio for the first time on July 8-9. The O’Reilly Auto Parts 150 will cover 151 miles in 67 laps around the historic track, and the two-day event also includes the Dawn 150, an ARCA Menards Series race taking the green flag on Friday late afternoon. Fans will have the opportunity to see ARCA Menards Series team transporters, race cars and drivers up close at the Menards Fan Fest at the Menards store in Ontario, Ohio, on Thursday, July 7 starting at 3 p.m. ET to kick off the weekend’s festivities. The race team haulers will depart Menards and parade in unison to Mid-Ohio at approximately 7 p.m. ET.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – For Porsche enthusiasts, status is often measured in numerical nomenclature.
908. 917. 956. 962. All iconic racing car model numbers.
Prepare to add “963” to that legendary list.
Porsche revealed Friday at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England that its future challenger for the top categories of international sports car endurance racing has been designated Type 963.
The Porsche 963 is a prototype sports car designed to LMDh regulations for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. LMDh cars like the Porsche, as well as competing designs from BMW, Acura, Cadillac and Lamborghini, will be able to vie with prototypes built to Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) specifications for overall honors in IMSA’s new top class beginning in 2023 called Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) – a name that revives memories of a glorious period for IMSA in the 1980s and ‘90s. Likewise, LMDh and LMH prototypes will be eligible to compete in the WEC as well.
Remember those evocative Lowenbrau-sponsored Porsche 962s driven by the likes of Al Holbert, Derek Bell, and Chip Robinson to so many amazing IMSA race wins and championships? That’s the legacy that the new 963 and the revived GTP class is poised to build upon.
Not to mention the significant Porsche prototypes that preceded the 962. The preceding 956, made famous in Rothmans colors by Jacky Ickx, Hans Stuck and Stefan Bellof, was the symbolic sports car of the ‘80s. A decade earlier, the 917 was a legend unto itself, as the winner of all the key international endurance races (Rolex 24 At Daytona, Twelve Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Le Mans as well as Watkins Glen and Spa), but also in sprint race configuration as the 917-10 and 917-30 that claimed consecutive SCCA Can-Am championships for Porsche and Team Penske and drivers George Follmer and Mark Donohue. In the ‘60s, the 908 started it all.
Porsche and Penske have teamed up again, as Porsche Penske Motorsport will field a pair of 963s in the 2023 WeatherTech Championship and two entries in the WEC. The new design features a 4.6-liter, twin-turbo V-8 based on the engine that powered the Porsche RS Spyder Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) contender to multiple victories around the world between 2005 and 2010, but otherwise is all new. Like all GTP competitors, the 963 is based on a homologated LMP2-specification central section, in this case produced by Multimatic – one of four approved chassis suppliers.
The 963 has served as the test car for the standardized hybrid powertrain system being developed for all LMDh cars. Porsche has completed nearly 8,000 kilometers of testing over the last several months.
The Friday demonstration run at Goodwood unveiled a traditional Porsche white, red and black livery that will likely be carried over into the 2023 racing season.
“We’re on a very good path, but there is still work to be done before the start of next season,” said Thomas Laudenbach, Porsche vice president of Motorsport.
“I’m positive we will be well-positioned when it comes to technology, and we’ve also created the relevant team structures to set us up for wins in the thrilling competition between many manufacturers and different concepts.”
Porsche has not announced specific driver assignments for the IMSA and WEC endeavors, but former WeatherTech Championship champions Dane Cameron and Felipe Nasr are among a talented group of Porsche works drivers.
Other confirmed 2023 drivers for the worldwide 963 program include other names familiar to the WeatherTech Championship –Kevin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor, Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet – along with Andre Lotterer and Michael Christensen. Specific driver assignments, along with the nomination of additional endurance race drivers, will follow at a later date.
Porsche and the Penske organization have an extensive history of collaboration that covers more than half a century, from their domination of the SCCA Can-Am Championship that resulted in consecutive titles for Follmer and Donohue in 1972 and ’73 to the success of the RS Spyder program in more recent times.
“Expectations are extremely high, not only from the public, but from Porsche and Team Penske, who have written great motorsports chapters together in the past,” said Jonathan Diuguid, director of Porsche Penske Motorsport.
Here’s a snapshot of prior Porsche prototype success:
  • 908: The 908 prototype debuted in 1968 as Porsche’s most serious attempt to date at winning Daytona, Le Mans and the other top sports car races around the world. Over the next four years, it would be used as a development tool to create the crushing 917.
  • 917: With an air-cooled flat 12-cylinder engine replacing the 908’s flat-8, the 917 lifted Porsche to the peak of worldwide sports car racing, memorably dominating the sport in 1970-71 with that legendary Gulf livery. When the 917 was outlawed from Le Mans and the WEC, Porsche cut open the cockpit and turbocharged the flat-12 engine to turn it into a sprint racer that swept through the Can-Am series.
  • 962: Continuing on the successful 917 theme which begat the Le Mans-winning 936 and 956, the 962 was a mildly reworked version of the ultra-successful 956 that racked up many significant race wins in WEC competition, with the changes made in the interest of safety. Porsche 962s won the top category of the IMSA championship from 1985-88.
  • RS Spyder: The RS Spyder claimed 25 class victories in IMSA competition between 2005-10, including three overall race wins when the car defeated theoretically faster LMP1 class competition.

The annual program is designed to provide tuition support and opportunities for students seeking to work in motorsports in a variety of fields, including marketing, communications, human resources, finance, engineering and trade disciplines.


The Dr Pepper and 23XI SPEED Institute tuition program was established in 2021. Since 2008, Dr Pepper has awarded more than $13 million in tuition to deserving students.

Toyota wins at Le Mans

After 24 hours of intense racing, Toyota Gazoo Racing claimed a fifth successive victory at the 90th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. On Sunday afternoon at 4.00 p.m. local time, the No. 8 prototype took the chequered flag in front of an exuberant crowd at Circuit de la Sarthe. For almost a century, the world’s greatest endurance race has been at the forefront of innovation and this year’s event signalled a significant new chapter for the sport. As the Official Timepiece of the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 2001, and more recently the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), Rolex supports the ongoing quest for excellence at the highest level of motor racing.

This year’s race played out under clear skies and, amid soaring track temperatures, man and machine were tested over a gruelling 24 hours. Across the four categories, 62 cars started the race and, as day gave way to night, just a few seconds separated the Toyota Gazoo Racing duo at the front of the field. As the sun rose over Circuit de la Sarthe the emotional and physical ware began to tell; WEC frontrunner No. 36 Alpine Elf Endurance Team recovered from a heavy incident, while in the LMGTE Pro category No. 64 Corvette Racing relinquished a commanding lead, following a sudden collision. The elite Hypercar class saw a Toyota Gazoo Racing 1–2, with the No. 38 JOTA ORECA 07-Gibson racing to victory in the competitive LMP2 category. The No. 91 Porsche 911 RSR was consistent throughout, taking a comfortable win in the LMGTE Pro’s last 24 Hours of Le Mans, while the No. 33 TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage AMR gained honours in the LMGTE Am class.

Time is an integral part of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with every lap and every second magnified in this ultimate race against the clock. Following the conclusion of this year’s race, the winning drivers stepped onto the podium to receive the 24 Hours of Le Mans trophy and a specially engraved Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, in recognition of the dedication and perseverance required to succeed. Having won the event for the third time, Toyota Gazoo Racing's Brendon Hartley reflects:

"Taking the car over the line today was a very special feeling. I’m a small piece of the puzzle; all of my teammates are part of this victory. I broke down in tears after the race as my wife and six-month-old daughter are here and, not that she’ll probably remember it, but I have promised that this Rolex is for her."

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is steeped in tradition yet continues to demonstrate a relentless commitment to performance and technical advancement. The extreme conditions of the 13.626 kilometre racetrack mean reliable solutions are found faster and the endurance epic has proven to be the ideal testing ground for future technologies. For the first time in the 99-year history of the race, this year saw the introduction of 100 per cent renewable fuel, as well as the track debut of a hydrogen-electric prototype prior to the race.

Next year, the focus will be on the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, when the race reaches this milestone on the 10–11 June 2023. As its most decorated driver, Rolex Testimonee Tom Kristensen will take on the role of ambassador for the centenary edition. Looking ahead to the event, Kristensen says:

"The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a legendary race; the history is mythical, brought to life by the extraordinary stories throughout almost a hundred years of racing. In 2023, all the manufactures will want to return so we will see many new teams and drivers entering, which shows how important and relevant Le Mans is. Attending as part of the Rolex family will give me an opportunity to look back on my career and be reminded of my love for the sport."

A special trophy is being designed to honour this momentous occasion and will embark on a journey to a variety of motor sport celebrations around the world, which reflect on the past while looking to the future. Its official unveiling is set to take place later this year on Sunday 21 August at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® in California (USA). The trophy will then travel onto further events with which Rolex has close ties, including the Goodwood Revival in West Sussex (UK), before it ultimately returns home to Circuit de la Sarthe in June, in time for the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2023.

"When you look the onboard camera with the helmets, can you imagine the neck and the back of the driver how much impact they're suffering, the whole track, how many laps, how many hours they are under this severe porpoising and that's giving a shock to the back for sure.” 

“I'm sure Lewis is feeling a lot, the pain in his back."

"It's very impressive when you look at the onboard camera how much he is moving up and down and how much you can see, the frequency of the bumping of the driver is exactly opposite to the car. And then it gives this you know shaking movement that for the body."

"It's not easy but I think with modern medicine they can help Lewis to run again Friday in Montreal.”

  • Mercedes for sure are fighting the porpoising issue - working the suspension could help but it is a different technical problem

“I'm sure Mercedes are fighting this issue from the beginning of the season, still there it is.”

“Sometimes on some tracks it’s more because it depends a lot on the velocity ratio of the suspension, but looks like most of the cars are just working the tires, not even the suspension.” 

“The suspension works minimum, it’s nearly solid suspension, but it's a difficult technical problem to solve because that's when the car is stuck to the ground and then you lose the pressure and it starts going up and down, up and down."

"Pressure, no pressure, low pressure under the car because the the body under the car is generating a lot of downforce and suddenly you lose the low pressure, the car goes up and then comes down.”

The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli is excited to announce a new partnership with CForce Naturally Alkaline Water, owned and run by Chuck Norris. Christine GZ has been passed fit by Veloce Racing to compete in the upcoming Extreme E double-header following her crash in the season opener.

Following an extended break after the first X Prix of Extreme E Season 2, the on-track action resumes in Sardinia with two rounds in one week (6-7 and 9-10 July) and GZ will be back in action for her team alongside Lance Woolridge.

The pair are already back behind the wheel for three days of testing this week as final preparations get underway for Veloce.

The British team experienced the highs and lows of top-level motorsport during the Extreme E season opener in Saudi Arabia in February, showing huge promise in the Desert X Prix.

Veloce Racing looked set for one of the quickest Qualifying times in NEOM. However, with the finish line fast approaching and purple lighting up the timing screen, GZ carried too much speed into one of the final corners and the car flipped into a dramatic barrel roll.

GZ was taken to hospital where it was confirmed she had fractured her foot, and an intensive course of rehab was to follow. Following months of hard work and clearance from the medical team, GZ is now taking part in Veloce’s testing in the South of France.

All Extreme E teams have been given the opportunity to get some testing in ahead of the Island X Prix double-header.

Each team has been allocated 250kWh, with a maximum output of 360kW allowed. This is equivalent to about 125km of running, and each of these kilometres will prove crucial for Veloce as they look to build on the pace showed in NEOM and target a strong performance in Sardinia.

Christine GZ, Veloce Racing, said: “It’s great to see that my hard work has paid off and I’ve recovered in time for the next rounds of Extreme E.

“Everyone in the team has been doing an amazing job to make sure we are ready for action, and testing is going to be a big part of our preparations.

“I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel and to get back to driving with Lance again. We worked together so well in NEOM and I’m excited to see what progress we can make as the season goes on.”

Lance Woolridge, Veloce Racing, commented: “The season opener in NEOM wasn’t the way Christine and I wanted to start our first campaign for Veloce, but the pace we both showed was promising and one of many positives to take from that weekend.

“I’m relieved Christine is okay and fit to race. Of course we’ll both want to go all-out again in Sardinia, but it’s important that we work towards a consistent performance and some solid points from the upcoming double-header, and that starts with this testing.”
