Top-25 Finish For Ty Dillion At The Tricky Triangle

As the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season moves along, Germain Racing and driver Ty Dillon have started seeing improvement in their program. A week ago, the GEICO team notched a 21st place finish at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a track that previously caused the team fits, and the group looked to keep the momentum rolling this weekend at Pocono Raceway.

 

Dillon and his #13 GEICO Camaro ZL1 were 26th in the weekend’s opening practice session on Friday before later qualifying 29th. Despite the challenging qualifying position, Dillon and crew chief Matt Borland felt confident in their plan when race day arrived.

 

While weather threatened the area, it would not impact the scheduled 400-miles of racing. Dillon and the GEICO Camaro ZL1 started from the 29th position and, during the parade laps, the young gun radioed to his crew, “Let’s stay solid all day and we will get ourselves a good finish.”

 

When the green flag turned the field loose for 160-laps of racing action, Dillon acted quickly, jumping into the top-25 in the opening few laps. He would remain there for the balance of the afternoon, but battled handling issues, which the Germain Racing pit crew addressed with each pit stop. Their efficiency on pit road helped keep Dillon and his GEICO machine in good shape on the racing surface, where he hustled to both gather and defend much desired real estate.

 

Dillon’s words during the pre-race parade laps proved prophetic, as the team would remain consistent throughout the afternoon and escape the Tricky Triangle with another top-25 finish after taking the checkered flag on the lead lap, in the 23rd position. As he crossed the finish line, Dillon took to his radio to share his thoughts with the GEICO crew: “Good execution today, guys. I know we need to have more speed, but this is what’s going to make us better. I appreciate it.”

 

Dillon’s effort accounts for Germain Racing’s eighth top-25 finish of the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season.

 

“Our GEICO Racing team played the strategy game today. We didn’t have the speed that the leaders did, but my crew chief Matt Borland made strategy calls that kept us ahead of the other cars on our lap,” Dillon said following the race. “We took the wave-around during each stage break to get back on the lead lap, and we were able to maintain our position in the final stage. The first caution of the last stage fell perfectly into our pit strategy, and we really had the balance of our Camaro ZL1 in a better place than it had been all day. I would have loved to break into the top 20 there at the end, but we didn’t give up and kept fighting back. We had good execution today, and that is what is going to make us better.”

 

Next up for Germain Racing is a trip to the Irish Hills of Michigan for race number 15 of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.

 

Ty Dillon and the No. 13 Twisted Tea Camaro ZL1 will hit the track at Michigan International Speedway for the weekend’s opening practice session on Friday, June 8th, at 11:35 AM (ET). Qualifying will follow at 4:10 PM (ET).

                                                     

The FireKeepers Casino 400 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race is on Sunday, June 10th, and it will be televised live on FOX beginning at 2 PM (ET). The Motor Racing Network (MRN) will carry the live radio broadcast, along with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.
