Cale Yarborough Car Piloted by Harvick on Pole for Southern 500 at Darlington

In 1979, Busch Beer and Timmonsville, South Carolina native Cale Yarborough would team up for a marketing campaign that would roll into the season opening Daytona 500 for the race seen around the world with snow covering the Northeast.

Late in the race that Yarborough and Donnie Allison would wreck each other, get out the car and on national television brawl on the backstretch. A fight still referenced today as a turning point in NASCAR popularity.

Today at Darlington Raceway just down the road from Timmonsville, Harvick driving the Busch schemed car will start from the pole for his second pole since 2014 with a speed of 177.730 mph. The last time he did so he also went to victory lane.

Starting behind Harvick tomorrow night will be points leader Martin Truex Jr. who clocked in at 177.077 mph and needing just 20 points over second place in points Larson to claim the regular season championship prior to Richmond next week.

Larson for his effort will start in fourth with a speed of 176.565 and Ky. Busch who swept Bristol last time out just in front in third at 176.682.

Rounding out the top-five is McMurray with lapping the track at 176.422.

Playoff bubble drivers Jones and Suarez for their qualifying efforts will start 10th and 19th.

Tomorrow night’s Bojangles Southern 500 will roll off on NBCSN at 6 P.M. and scheduled for 367 laps (501.3 miles).
