Following the release of Mike Ford the crew chief for Denny Hamlin just over a week ago, Joe Gibbs has also released Greg Zipadelli effective immediately. Greg is known for asking in the past to be released from Joe Gibbs to join Stewart Haas Racing and follow driver Tony Stewart several times over the last several years.
In addition to being released Greg will effectively join Stewart Haas Racing as the competition director replacing Bobby Hutchens who was released over the summer. In the 10 years at Joe Gibbs with Stewart behind the while and Zippy on the pit box the pair won two Sprint Cup championships and 33 races together.
Greg came into NASCAR back in the 80s winning the Whelen Modifieds championship with driver Mike McLaughlin in 1988, then moving on into the Camping World East Series and finally as crew chief of the No. 20 driven by Tony Stewart prior to the ’99 season.
Following the release of Zipadelli, JRG is expected to name Jason Radcliff as the crew chief to lead Logano and team in 2012. Radcliff moves up from the Nationwide Series following a 2009 championship with Kyle Busch and Owners championship in 2010.
