Phoenix Notes: Denny Hamlin is a two-time winner at Phoenix Raceway with victories in March 2012 and November 2019. In March, Hamlin started first, led 68 laps and finished 11th at the track after a spin early in the final stage. Overall, he has recorded five top-10 finishes in the past seven races at Phoenix.
Qualifying at Phoenix: Hamlin has earned three pole awards at Phoenix, including his first career pole in November 2005 and another earlier this season. Dating back to March 2019, Hamlin has started sixth or better in 10 of the last 11 Phoenix races, including three front-row starting spots in five races with the Next Gen car.
Round of 8 Recap: Hamlin’s 5.3-average finishing position during the Round of 8 was tied for the best among the eight remaining playoff drivers. Despite the stellar results, Hamlin found himself below the cutline to advance to the Championship 4.
Playoff History: This season marked Hamlin’s 18th appearance in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs giving him the most appearances since the postseason format began in 2004.
History of the 11: Throughout NASCAR history, the No. 11 has visited victory lane more than any other car number. Hamlin’s win at Dover Motor Speedway was the 234th time a No. 11 car has won in the Cup Series. For Hamlin, his 54 victories driving the No. 11 are only one behind NASCAR Hall of Famer Cale Yarborough for most on the illustrious list of drivers who have wheeled a No. 11 car to victory lane. That list includes Bobby Allison (3 wins), Mario Andretti (1 win), Buddy Baker (2 wins), Geoffrey Bodine (4 wins), Bill Elliott (6 wins), A.J. Foyt (1 win), Denny Hamlin (54 wins), Ned Jarrett (49 wins), Junior Johnson (11 wins), Parnelli Jones (1 win), Terry Labonte (4 wins), Darrell Waltrip (43 wins), and Cale Yarborough (55 wins).

Hamlin Conversation – Phoenix
What is your approach to Phoenix without a shot at the championship?
“We still have a lot to race for. We’re currently ninth in the points and we can get up seventh with a good run, so we want to do that to at least maximize the position we’re in. Beyond that, Phoenix is obviously a place that is very important because it’s the championship race again next year, so anything we can learn this weekend will help us next season. It has been an up-and-down year, so we’d like to go finish it off strong.”
FedEx Along for the Ride at Phoenix: For this weekend’s race at Phoenix Raceway, the b-post of Hamlin’s No. 11 Camry will feature FedEx to recognize the start of peak season when more than 500,000 team members in over 220 countries and territories will do their part in delivering more happiness for the holidays.
