Storyline – Cup teams on well known tire set-up at Phoenix: While this is not the same tire set-up Cup teams ran at Phoenix Raceway earlier in the season, they are well familiar with the combination of left- and right-side tires they will run this weekend. Phoenix falls into a group of tracks that are one mile and under, giving Goodyear the opportunity to standardize a tire set-up and give teams more laps to build up a notebook how it will react in race conditions. They can add to that with three sets of tires for a 50-minute practice session on Friday.
“This is an important weekend for the Cup Series, being the championship race at Phoenix,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “Teams have a lot of experience on this tire set-up, having run it several times already this season. Even compared to what we ran at Phoenix earlier in the season – with the same tread compounds and just a construction update on the right-side – these teams know what to expect with this set-up. With everything that is at stake this Sunday, having that comfort level with the tire set-up will help teams focus on maximizing their performance.”
Notes – Construction update to right-side on Phoenix tire set-up: Being on the 18-inch bead diameter tire, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series at Phoenix this week . . . this is left-side tire code debuted at Phoenix in March . . . this right-side code is different than the one run at Phoenix-1 (construction update), though Cup teams have run it several times at other tracks this season . . . . Cup teams have run this same tire set-up at Iowa and New Hampshire, as well as in the “Prime” set-up at North Wilkesboro and Richmond-2 . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars do not run inner liners in any of their tires.
Wet Weather Tires – Goodyear brings white-lettered “wets” to Phoenix: Goodyear will bring its 18-inch wet weather radial tires to Phoenix for the NASCAR Cup cars, should NASCAR determine that conditions warrant . . . Cup teams will have a maximum of 4 sets of wet weather tires for the event . . . NASCAR Cup teams last ran the wet weather tire in competition at Chicago in July . . . in addition to the obvious difference of a tread pattern versus Goodyear’s dry weather “slick” tires, the “Goodyear” and “Eagle” lettering on the sidewalls of the wet weather tires is white, not the standard yellow.
