Storyline – Pit strategy in play for Cup teams at Talladega: While NASCAR Cup teams will see some tire wear at Talladega Superspeedway this weekend, there will be a lot of opportunities for pit and tire strategy on NASCAR’s longest oval. Depending on the situation, teams will use four-tire, two-tire and fuel only pit stops during the 188-lap race. Often, one’s tire decisions come down to staying closely aligned with teammates and others they are working with to maintain their position in the draft.
“Since we moved to this 18-inch tire in 2022, this is the 12th race at either Talladega and Daytona on this tire set-up for Cup teams,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “Tire wear is fairly manageable at Talladega, though it has slowly increased over the years. Having said that, tire strategy will be a big factor in Sunday’s race with teams mixing in two-tire and fuel only pit stops depending on the stint. Especially on green flag stops, the main goal will be to stay lined up with teammates or others from the same manufacturer to best manage the draft.”
Notes – Cup cars on standard Talladega/Daytona tire set-up: Being on 18-inch bead diameter tires, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series at Talladega this weekend . . . the Cup cars will run the same combination of left- and right-side tires that they’ve run at Talladega since 2022 . . . these teams have also run this tire set-up at Daytona over that same time . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars do not run inner liners in any of their tires.
