Martin Truex Jr. to retire after the 2024 season

After 34 wins, 27 poles, one Cup Series Championship, and 19 full time seasons, Martin Truex Jr., will end his career after the championship race at Phoenix in November and head into retirement.

It’s been incredible,” stated Truex in the media center. “It’s been a hell of a ride. I’m excited about the future. Not really sure what that looks like yet, but I feel good about my decision. I just want to thank Coach (Joe Gibbs) and everybody at JGR Toyota. They’ve been absolutely amazing to me. To be able to win a championship is something I always dreamed up. To be able to get that done was amazing. I just feel really lucky to be surrounded by a lot of great people over the years. It’s been a true honor, and I’ll miss all those people for sure.”

One of the reasons why he will hang up the helmet is the packed schedule from week to week. “It’s like you don’t have a life. You’re married to racing, and this is all you do everyday Monday till Sunday. That’s all you do. So it’s just going to be interesting to lead kind of a normal life for a little while and see what that’s like. It’s been, you know, I haven’t. I’ve never done that.”

But while announcing he won’t be back full time in NASCAR, Truex also added, “I won’t be gone. I’ll still be around. We’re going to do some stuff together as well as have some fun and enjoy life a little bit.”

But what Martin will miss the most about racing full time, is the team and the people in this sport. “Just hanging out with the guys and going to dinner, talking about the race car or talking about the race on the way home in the plane or something like that. It’s always fun. I’ll miss it for sure.”

Truex enters Iowa fifth in the point standings, looking to score what possibly could be his only NASCAR start at Iowa Speedway.
