Georgia Native Kyle Plott Wins Legends Big Money 100

Kyle Plott, of Marietta, Ga., led the final 33 laps on his way to winning the Legends Big Money 100 and taking home the top prize of $25,000 on Tuesday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Plott started ninth in the Legends Big Money 100 A-Main and took over the lead on Lap 67 to win the most prestigious Legend Car event of the year and one of the largest in all of grassroots racing.

“I knew if I got out front I could hold them off,” said Plott. “We were real good this morning and everything just clicked today. It was a good race. Thanks to Charlotte for putting on these great events.”

Plott, who regularly races in the Pro division in the Summer Shootout Series with his brother Kason, who races in the Young Lions division, knew exactly what he would do with the $25,000 purse he would receive for winning the Legends Big Money 100.

“We’ll put it back into racing and go do this some more,” he said.

Steven Cantrell, of Charlotte, N.C., led the field to the green flag in the 100-lap feature event but Doug Stevens, of Griffin, Ga., quickly stole the lead away as he drove to the inside to pass the pole-sitter and lead the third lap. Stevens would pace the field until a caution brought the field back together, allowing Cantrell to catch back up and retake the lead on lap 42. Cantrell remained in front as the field took the mandatory caution flag on Lap 50 to pit and work on their cars during a 10-minute break.

Cantrell started where he left off before the break, in front of the field, until Tyler Green, of China Grove, N.C., made an inside move on the backstretch to take over the lead on Lap 60.

Plott made his way into the third position as he and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star David Ragan, of Unadilla, Ga., caught up to Green, making it three wide on Lap 67. Plott would come away with the led as Ragan took over second, shifting Green back to third. Once Plott was out front, Ragan tried to catch him, but was unsuccessful as Plott grabbed the win.

Ragan settled for second with Ben Rhodes, of Louisville, Ky., claiming third in the Legends Big Money 100. Last year’s Legends Million winner, Daniel Hemric of Kannapolis, N.C., finished eighth, in the event that boasted a $100,000 total purse.

In the Young Lions/Semi-Pro A-Main, the 2011 Summer Shootout Semi-Pro champion Kyle Hall, from Charlotte, N.C., started from the pole but the lead changed hands early in the event between Hall and Josh Morris, from Fredericksburg, Va. A long green flag run strung out the field until a caution for debris slowed the race on Lap 26. Following the restart, Morris, a Young Lions competitor in the Summer Shootout Series, took the lead and never looked back, despite a challenge for the win on the final few laps from Kason Plott, from Marietta, Ga. Plott finished second, with Hall ending in third and Matt Pappa in fourth. Because the first four finishers had already qualified for the big race, Justin Carroll, from Concord, N.C., transferred into the Legends Big Money 100 with his fifth-place finish.

The 2011 Summer Shootout Series Masters Division champion Jeff Green, from Owensboro, Ky., dominated the Masters A-Main. Kevin Foisy, from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, started the race from the pole position, but Green took the lead on Lap 2 and led the remaining 48 laps of the 50-lap feature. The race was slowed at Lap 23 for several restart attempts, but by Lap 28 Green pulled away to a half-lap lead over second-place Tim Brockhouse, from Webster, Minn.  Finishing third was Scott Anderson, from Austin, Texas. With his victory in the Masters A-Main, Green transferred into the Legends Big Money 100.

Also on Tuesday, the Bandolero divisions held the final round of feature races in their two-day championship event. Bandolero feature winners on Tuesday night included, Walker Yates, of Clemmons, N.C., in the Bandolero Outlaws division; Carson Ferguson, of Mt. Holly, N.C., in the Bandolero Bandits division; and Trent Barnes, of Whiteford, N.C., in the Bandolero Beginner Bandits division.
