Kvapil Will Reload and Go Back on Offensive

ad to Pocono Raceway this week ready to bounce back from a disappointing trip to Indianapolis, Ind. The team leaves behind one 2.5-mile track to go to another 2.5-miler where they’ve had success in the past.

Kvapil has three top-20 finishes at the Long Pond, Pa., tri-oval, although Sunday’s Good Sam RV Insurance 500 will be his first appearance at the “Tricky Triangle” this year. Sam Hornish Jr. subbed for Kvapil at the June Pocono race while Kvapil competed in a Camping World Truck Series race.

“We obviously need to rebound and have a good weekend at Pocono this week. Not making the race at Indy was not at all what we were expecting. We felt confident we’d be in the race and have a good run and get closer to getting the No. 38 back into the top 35. So, now we just need to put that behind us and make sure we don’t miss any more races. We’ve made so much progress as a team this year. It’s unfortunate we had this setback because it’s really not indicative of how we’ve been working as a team the past couple months. So, we’ll start with a clean slate at Pocono and not look back.

“Pocono is a really unique racetrack. Some of the things that you learn at Indy can apply there, but Pocono is a lot bumpier and rougher because the asphalt’s really worn out. You used to be able to take a lot more from Indianapolis to Pocono, but I don’t really think that works anymore. Probably more than anything, we’ll look at what Jay (Guy) had in the car earlier in the year with Sam (Hornish Jr.), and also look at what we ran last year. I think we had a pretty decent package there both times last year.

“I like going to Pocono. It’s a fun racetrack and it’s a neat area of the country to see. I’m excited to go for the first time this year. It’s challenging, though. Like I said, it’s so bumpy and rough, that you’ve really got to work on the handling of your car and how you drive it.

“This is a 500-mile race. So, it’s good to have that Roush-Yates engine under the hood. Doug Yates and the guys do a great job with what they give us. Heck, we run 600-mile races at Charlotte and don’t have any trouble.”
