Gilliland: Go Backwards at Pocono

David Gilliland, driver of the No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford, comments on racing at Pocono Raceway:

“Our car at Pocono a few weeks back was pretty good. We had decent speed and overall felt pretty good about it. And we felt like we learned some good things. A lot of teams tested up there and we did not. But we learned a lot during the race so I think we can go back there pretty prepared. We feel like we have what it takes to bump ourselves up a handful of spots.

“Turn 3 is the most critical there. You’ve got that big, long front straightaway. So, if you can’t get off of 3, you just lose so much time. The first couple times I went there, I was worried about Turn 1 because that’s what you normally do as a racer. And usually when you concentrate on the first turn, you make the rest better. But Pocono is the opposite. You start with 3 and work your way backwards. And all the turns are so different, you’re really not going to get the balance perfect in all of them.”

JUST THE FACTS: Gilliland has 15 Sprint Cup career starts at Pocono Raceway … His top finish at the 2.5-mile oval is 16th (2008).
