Truex prepares for next week's 600 with Sprint Showdown
Ryan Truex and the No. 83 Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry team finished 19th in the Sprint Showdown at Charlotte Motor Speedway. With only the top two positions transferring to Saturday night's Sprint All-Star Race, the BK Racing team knew they had a tall order to make it in the event; however, the event also serves as welcome track time to prepare for next weeks' 600-mile event.
After starting in the 19th position, Truex called into his Burger King / Dr Pepper team to report that the splitter was bottoming out, which prevented his Toyota Camry from turning properly through the corners. With the first 20-lap segment complete, Truex's team made an air pressure and chassis adjustment looking to improve the handling of their car for the final 20-lap segment. However, even with the changes, Truex continued to struggle during the final segment of the event. When the checkered flag waved, Truex's team finished in the 19th position, but with a better understanding of how their car will handle next Sunday night in the 600.
"The good news is that we learned a lot going into the 600," commented Truex. "Our Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry didn't handle exactly how we wanted. We made some changes and learned how those made the car react to the cool track temperatures, just like what we will experience in next weekend's race. The 600 is one of the hardest races that we'll encounter all season because it starts so early and ends so late, and the track changes so much during that timeframe. Knowing that we will experience that, any knowledge that we can gain about track conditions and how our car reacts to different changes is a bonus. I'm looking forward to racing again in Charlotte next week."
