Ryan Truex and the No. 83 Borla Exhaust Toyota Camry team finished in the 35th position at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon. After rolling off in the 39th position, the BK Racing team made a variety of changes to their Toyota Camry throughout the first half of the race, before ultimately landing on a setup package that only required minor tweaks for the end of the event. Truex and his Borla Exhaust Toyota team finished the 400-mile event in the 35th position.
Truex rolled off in the 39th position for the KOBALT 400 on Sunday afternoon, and almost immediately radioed into his crew expressing concern for the handling of his Toyota Camry. Reporting that the car was “wrecking loose,” the BK Racing team decided that wholesale changes would be required during the first half of the race to dial in their Toyota Camry. With each trip to pit road, the team made a variety of changes, slowly getting the car handling as Truex needed.
With only 18 caution laps being completed all afternoon, the pace of the race was set at a blistering rate as the leaders circled around the 1.5-mile oval. With Truex’s car requiring a bit of extra attention on pit road, the crew lost valuable track position, which ultimately removed them from contention for the win. The Borla Exhaust team worked diligently on every pit stop, and by the time the race reached the halfway point, the balance of the car only required minor adjustment to fine-tune the handling and keep up with the changing track conditions. By the time the checkered flag waved, Truex was scored in the 35th position.
“While we didn’t have the result we were hoping, I still feel like we had a valuable learning experience at the track today,” commented Truex. “This was my first time racing a Sprint Cup Series car on an intermediate track; these types of speedways handle a little bit differently than the short tracks that I’ve competed on in the past, and they require a lot of communication between the driver and crew. To know that we were able to improve our car throughout the day, and that we had it handling how we wanted by the end of the race-I see those as two positives for our Borla Exhaust team today. I’m very thankful that BK Racing has given me the opportunity to race with this team this season, and I’m excited about the improvements that we’re making every week. I raced in Bristol [Tenn.] last fall, so I’m excited to get back to a track where I have some experience in this type of car, and to see what we’re able to accomplish.”
