Race Notes
Double Duty for Suárez at the Coliseum: Daniel Suárez will drive in the Mexico Series Race Sunday afternoon before the Clash. It marks his first appearance in the series since 2014. During his 2009-2014 stint in the series, Suárez won 10 of 76 races and earned 13 poles.
Quaker State: As part of its extension announcement with Trackhouse Racing earlier this month, the company announced it will serve as the primary sponsor of Suárez's Chevrolet in the Mexico race.
Mexico Car and Crew Chief: The Escudería Telmex team will field Suárez's Chevrolet for Sunday's Mexico Series race. Trackhouse engineer José Blasco will serve as the crew chief. Blasco served as Suárez's Cup crew chief at Atlanta Motor Speedway in April 2021. That race marked the first time that a Cup team's driver/crew chief combination has come from Mexico since brothers Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez worked together for one race in 1959.
Media Opportunity: Suárez will join the Fox broadcast crews at 1 p.m. PT on Friday at the Coliseum as part of a press conference to discuss the race.
The Clash: Sunday marks Suárez's third start at the Coliseum. He finished 19th in 2022 and 14th in 2021.
Worldwide Express: Worldwide Express, which first partnered with Trackhouse Racing in 2022, makes its 2024 debut Sunday and begins its third season of sponsorship with the team.
Worldwide Express Key to Coliseum Race: With the herculean effort of converting the 100-year-old football stadium into a quarter-mile racetrack, NASCAR turned to Worldwide Express and its sister brand, GlobalTranz, to ship the concrete barriers to create the track. About fifty trucks delivered more than 50 tons of concrete barriers to Los Angeles making early morning deliveries to avoid disrupting traffic.
New Crew Chief: Matt Swiderski begins his first season as the No. 99 team's crew chief. The 42-year-old Swiderski led the No. 16 Kaulig Racing NASCAR Cup Series team to two victories over the last three seasons.
Suárez Quotes:
What are your thoughts on the Mexico Series race?
“This is so cool. I can’t wait to see a lot of the people I used to race with. I never dreamed something like this would happen. I am very proud of the series. Without the Mexico Series I don’t think I would have ever had a chance of becoming a Cup Series driver. I am honored to be invited to race and see it as a way to say thank you for everything that series did for me over the years. Plus, I really want us to put on a good show and it would be amazing if we could win!”
What are your thoughts on new crew chief Matt Swiderski in 2024?
“I’m excited to get to work with Matt (Swiderski). The Clash comes at a good time because it gives us a chance to work together at a racetrack before we go to Daytona. I think success boils down to communication, so I am looking forward to getting going in Los Angeles this weekend.”
What is your strategy for the Clash?
“Survive. You have to be there at the end. We had 16 cautions last year. That tells you survival is the key to winning.”
