Last week Rodney Childers, crew chief of the No. 55 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, announced that he would move to Stewrat-Haas Racing to be the crew chief for Kevin Harvick in 2014. On Monday, he spent his last day at the Michael Waltrip Racing shop as MWR has decided to move on in the 2013 season without Childers.
Scott Miller, the current executive vice president for competition at MWR, will take over crew chief duties on the No. 55 Toyota driven by Brian Vickers starting this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Billy Scott, a race engineer on the No. 55 team the past two seasons, will also step up and take a bigger role in car setup and race weekend preparation for the team.
Miller is a seven-time Sprint Cup Series winning crew chief. Six of those wins came when he worked for Richard Childress Racing.
Vickers will drive 11 of the final 12 races in the 2013 season with Michael Waltrip driving at Talladega. The No. 55 team is currently 19th in owner points and vying for an owner’s Chase position but only has two races left to climb into a wild card spot.
There is no word yet on who will be the full-time crew chief in 2014 when Brian Vickers starts his first full season in the car.
