Dillon and GEICO team continue to impress with 16th place finish in Las Vegas

Armed with four consecutive top-20 finishes, two of which were top-15’s, Ty Dillon and the GEICO team rolled into the Entertainment Capital of the World with a bit of swagger. Confident from the moment they unloaded the No. 13 GEICO Camaro ZL1, the Germain Racing team focused on the race in both practice sessions and aimed only to continue the momentum that had been built over the previous four weeks.

While intermediate tracks have long given race teams headaches, Dillon and company seem to have gained an understanding of these facilities of late, recording three top-20’s and two top-15’s in the previous four weeks. Las Vegas Motor Speedway is yet another intermediate track, but rather than feeling apprehensive, the team entered the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series garage with optimism.

On Sunday, blazing heat accompanied the packed grandstands when the green flag turned the field loose for 400.5-miles of racing. Dillon and his GEICO Camaro started from the 27th position, but broke into the top-25 within the first two laps of the race. He continued his trek to the front and would be relentless in his effort to post another strong finish. Dillon found himself in the top-10 and top-5 on multiple occasions and was happy with his No. 13 machine throughout the evening.

Dillon and the No. 13 GEICO Camaro ZL1 ran solidly at the front of the field the entire night and when the checkered flag signaled the end of 267-laps of racing, they crossed the finish line in the 16th position. Dillon’s effort accounts for Germain Racing’s best-ever NASCAR Cup Series finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which marks the second consecutive week where the GEICO team collected its best result at a racetrack, as they finished 13th in Indianapolis a week ago. Dillon’s 16th place finish is also Germain Racing’s fifth consecutive top-20 result, four of which came at the always challenging intermediate tracks.

“Our GEICO team just kept digging all night long. We never gave up and every single one of my guys kept digging to get the best possible result we could,” Dillon said after the race. “Our car unloaded on Friday with a good baseline setup and I was happy with it throughout practice. I got too tight in qualifying, which put us farther back than we wanted to start, but Justin (Alexander) kept making the car better on each pit stop and used solid strategy to keep us in a position to capitalize towards the end of the race. We tried to push the fuel mileage in that final run, thought we had it, but just came up a bit short. I ran out in turn two on the final lap, but it sputtered long enough for me to get around to the checkered. I’m so proud of this team and the momentum that we have continued to build on this past month. Our program keeps making positive steps in the right direction and another top-20 finish tonight shows that.”

Germain Racing will now make their way to the Gecko’s backyard for race number 28 of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season. Richmond, VA, sits just 100-miles removed from GEICO’s corporate office in the Washington, DC, area.

Ty Dillon and the No. 13 GEICO Camaro ZL1 will hit the track at Richmond International Raceway for the weekend’s opening practice session on Friday, September 20th, at 11:35 AM (ET). Qualifying will follow at 6:05 PM (ET).
