MENCS: Austin Dillion on Pole for Sunday’s Geico 500 at Talladega

Austin Dillion won the Pole for Sunday’s Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

Dillion, who’s 29th birthday was on Saturday, posted a time of 49. 734 seconds with a top speed of 192.544 mph in the final round of Saturday’s single-vehicle, two-round qualifying session at Talladega.

“This is a great starting position,” Austin Dillion told FOX. “Starting position is one thing but finishing the race tomorrow is the big thing. We’ve got to go out there and gain as many points as we can.

“The great thing is we have a fast car. So, we just need to keep this momentum building.”

No matter Dillion’s result on Sunday, his No. 3 Chevorlet team may still face a penalty from NASCAR after officials confiscated the rear deck lid of his car on Friday.

Rounding out the top five were Aric Almirola in second (192.131 mph), Clint Bowyer in third (191.723 mph), Brad Keselowski in fourth (191.654 mph) and Daniel Hemric in fifth (191.436 mph).

Notables who missed out on the final round of qualifying included Kurt Busch in 14th, Kevin Harvick in 19th, Martin Truex Jr. in 20th, Kyle Busch in 22nd and 2019 Daytona 500 Champion Denny Hamlin in 23rd.

Live coverage of Sunday’s Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway begins at 2:00 p.m. Eastern on FOX.
