With the generosity of its fans and community supporters, Darlington Raceway’s Toys for Tots Fundraiser & Toy Drive raised over $3,000 worth of toys and cash donations, guaranteeing many children in the Pee Dee area will have a gift to open on Christmas Day this year.
The Toys for Tots Fundraiser & Toy Drive at Darlington Raceway is the largest single-day collection event in the Pee Dee area and has raised more than $12,000 for the local U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program since 2010.
“It’s great knowing that the success of this event makes a difference in children’s lives. Hopefully many more children in the Pee Dee will have a gift to open this Christmas thanks to the generosity of so many of our fans. We appreciate and thank everyone who took the time to support the event on Saturday,” Darlington president Chris Browning said.
Last Saturday’s Toys for Tots Fundraiser & Toy Drive gave fans the opportunity to take their personal vehicles on the track Too Tough To Tame in exchange for a $20 cash donation or new toy valued at $20. Hundreds of people showed up in their cars from as far away as Columbia, S.C., Charleston, S.C. and Charlotte, N.C.
Russell and Angela Gainey showed up early to support the event from nearby Hartsville, S.C.
“We love coming out to Darlington and participating in events like this because it’s for a good cause like Toys for Tots,” Angela Gainey said. “My husband is a big race fan and former U.S. Marine who has been attending races at Darlington for many years, so to have the opportunity to drive on the track and support the Marines’ Toys for Tots program was an easy decision for us. We’re glad to be part of it.”
The local U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots will have donation boxes in numerous businesses throughout the Pee Dee, including the lobby and Museum at Darlington Raceway, for the next few weeks leading up to Christmas. If fans missed the opportunity to attend the drive at the track last weekend, the Toys for Tots program encourages people to still donate at various drop-off points throughout the area.
“We appreciate Darlington Raceway and the local community for making this event such a big success. The impact the toy drive has for our organization every year is so important so we thank everyone who was involved,” Toys for Tots coordinator Rujon Williams said. “In case you missed the event last weekend, we still encourage people to give toys and donations and make a difference in the lives of our local children here in the Pee Dee that may be less fortunate than others.”
