Ross Chastain is ready to get back up on the wheel this weekend as the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series heads to the largest and fastest track that the series visit’s every year. After several weeks without primary sponsorship, Melon 1 returns to the hood of Chastain’s SS Green Light Racing Toyota and Ross and the team are excited for opportunity to show how good they can be while trying to avoid “The Big One” at the 2.66 mile Talladega Superspeedway.
Ross had a strong Toyota at the season opening NCWTS NextEra Energy Resources 250 at the Daytona International Speedway and just as it looked like a great finish was in-store, a late race incident dropped the Sunoco Rookie Contender out of the event. The SS Green Light Racing team will bring a repaired and hopefully even faster Tundra to Saturday’s Fred’s 250 presented by Coca-Cola for the season’s second and final superspeedway race at Talladega.
“We had a really good truck in the draft at Daytona; the truck did what we needed it to do,” Ross explained. “I’m really looking forward to get to Talladega. Bobby (team owner Bobby Dotter) said that Talladega will drive a lot different than Daytona and I just need to put it to the floor. It should be fun!”
“We’ll see how practice and qualifying go and then we’ll plan our race strategy, I know sometimes hanging out in the back is considered safer but you can get caught up back there too. We’ll see how we qualify and then plan for the race.”
Many of the NCWTS teams are rallying together in support of Breast Cancer awareness month in October and the familiar lime green trim on the Melon 1 Tundra has been replaced with florescent pink this week. “We want to do our part to support breast cancer awareness.”
The Fred’s 250 presented by Coca-Cola is the 288th consecutive NCWTS start for the SS Green Light Racing team and the twenty-third career start for Chastain in the Truck Series. Ross is fifteenth in the NCWTS point standings and has three top-ten finishes in sixteen starts 2012 including a career best third at Bristol on August 22nd.
“I’m really happy to have Melon 1 on board this week and to be able to go out and race hard for them,” Chastain concluded. “We are still looking for more help with the Texas and Phoenix races.”
There are 36 trucks on the entry list for the Fred’s 250 presented by Coca-Cola which will run prior to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway. Johnny Chapman will pilot the Wear Your Gear/Bobber.info No. 07 for SS Green Light Racing on Saturday.
