Austin Wayne Self and team ready to dig deep in the Eldora dirt

The wait is finally over for NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) veteran Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf).

The series treks from one of the biggest tracks on the schedule to Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway for Thursday night’s Eldora Dirt Derby and the opportunity for Self and his AM Racing team to deliver their third top-10 finish together this season.

Surprisingly, without much dirt experience, the annual dirt race has become a favorite for the Austin, Texas native.

From the aggressive practice sessions to the qualifying races and the thunderous applause when the engines are fired – the two-day spectacle is an experience that Self embraces and doesn’t take for granted.

“I’ve been waiting for this week all year,” said Self. “I love Eldora Speedway and getting to race on dirt. I’ve always had good runs at this place, and I feel it’s all about driving here, way different than anything we do all year.

“I would say this is one of the biggest NASCAR races of the year and it’s a pretty awesome experience to be a part of it.”

Self, 23, will make his third start at Eldora and after finishing inside the top-10 in his track debut in 2016, the Texan is ready to bounce back from an 18th place finish last year and collect his second top-10 in the last three races.  

“Eldora can be a very physical race,” mentioned Self. “Especially on race day. But it’s important to keep your cool and manage your tires so you have something to work with at the end of the race. You never know what to expect as far as cautions are concerned, so putting ourselves in good position track wise I think is going to be key.

“It’s going to be a fun couple of days and I can’t wait to get there.”

Self and his Eddie Troconis head to the Buckeye State on the heels of a respectable top-15 Truck Series finish at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, a weekend where Self ran double-duty and made his second ARCA Menards Series start of the season, earning a sixth-place finish in last Friday’s FORTS USA 150 at the 2.5-mile triangle.

Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program will support Self in his 76th career Truck Series start.

In 75 NGOTS races, the 2014 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year has one top-five (second at Daytona 2017) and six top-10 finishes. The Texan maintains an average finish of 18.1 during his three years of competition.

The Austin, Texas native is nestled 15th in the championship standings with nine races remaining.

The Eldora Dirt Derby (150 laps | 75 miles) is the 15th of 23 races on the 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series schedule. Practice begins on Weds., July 31 from 7:05 p.m. – 7:55 p.m., while final practice is set for 9:05 p.m. – 9:55 p.m. Qualifying races are set for race day, Thurs., Aug. 1 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The 32-truck field will take the green flag shortly after 9:00 p.m. with live coverage on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), the Motor Racing Network (Radio) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Satellite Radio, Channel 90).
