Fourth in Kansas promotes Piquet to fifth in championship

Nelson Piquet Jr today finished fourth in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway. The result in the fourth race of the season is a continuation of his strong start to the 2012 campaign and promotes him to fifth place in the championship with 140 points, just 23 points adrift of current leader Timothy Peters.

The Brazilian qualified 8th on Saturday morning in the #30 Qualcomm/Autotrac Chevrolet Silverado for Turner Motorsports. Nelson was aggressive from the green flag, moving up to sixth place by lap 26. After his second pitstop under green he was hampered by a yellow flag which dropped him to  16th in the standings but he battled back, moving into 13th on lap 107 and then gaining a further ten positions over the following 40 laps to sit in third position. After his final pitstop he found himself in fourth position, which he maintained to the checkered flag. Nelson’s Turner Motorsports team-mate James Buescher took the race victory.

Nelson Piquet Jr: “Today we were fast, but we didn’t have the fastest truck on the track. When you cannot fight for victory, the best result is to finish in the top pack and think about the championship. Last year I probably would be grasping for position at the end of the race but now I’m more experienced I know how to manage the end of the races and get the most out of it. I have to congratulate James for his first victory. The team is on a roll and we will continue to work hard and I’ll get my win soon.”
