AM Racing returns to NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series in 2019
Officials from AM Racing (@AMRacingNASCAR) announced today the reboot of their NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) team with driver Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) for the full season beginning with the NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Fri., Feb. 15, 2019.
As part of their restructure, AM Racing has moved its assets from Statesville, N.C. to Mooresville, N.C., where the team will be managed by longtime industry veteran Kevin Cywinski in a collaborative effort with Win-Tron Racing.
The team has purchased several trucks from GMS Racing to prepare for the upcoming 23-race schedule and has also signed a technical alliance with the organization.
“We are very optimistic about the upcoming season,” said AM Racing team principal Tim Self. “We have made a significant number of changes during the offseason including moving locations, purchasing new equipment and acquiring innovative personnel.
“We feel very confident in the direction of the race team and look forward to producing results on the track that will justify our restructuring and give our marketing partners the exposure and satisfaction they are looking for.”
Guiding Self for his fourth season on the NGOTS tour will be Eddie Troconis who joins AM Racing after serving as crew chief at ThorSport Racing for the past three seasons. Troconis brings a wealth of knowledge and winning pedigree to AM Racing. His traits has the family-owned organization hopeful it will propel them into the Truck Series Playoffs.
“I’m super excited in my new position at AM Racing and to be able to lead the team for the 2019 season,” said Troconis. “Kevin (Cywinski) and I have put together a great team with a combination of skills, knowledge and experience.
Everyone at the shop has a great attitude with good chemistry and that’s important.
“Austin (Wayne Self) is a great kid with a great attitude. He is at the shop working every day and that’s important to me. I believe he has the talent to drive a truck and run in the top-five and fight for wins. We have some things to work on, but I have been working with a lot of young drivers and I feel like I have a special way of communicating with them and hope that will translate with Austin too.
“I’m looking forward to a great year and I’m so glad to be back home in North Carolina!”
Self, 22 says the changes within his program have him excited to take the green flag at Daytona in less than two weeks.
“I can’t wait to work with Eddie and the guys on our AM Racing team,” sounded Self. “Our team has made a significant investment and I’m eager to see the results. I feel like with my experience and the leadership that Eddie brings to the table – we should find ourselves near the front a lot more in 2019.”
Announcements pertaining to marketing partners for Self’s No. 22 Chevrolet Silverado this season are forthcoming.
In 63 NGOTS starts, Self earned a career-best finish of second at Daytona International Speedway in 2017 – with one top-five and four top-10 efforts to his resume. He finished a career-high 12th in the championship standings in 2018.
The NextEra Energy Resources 250 from Daytona International Speedway is the first of 23 races on the 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series schedule. The season-opening race is set for Fri., Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. ET with live coverage on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SiriusXM Satellite Radio NASCAR Channel 90.
