As a past winner at Daytona International Speedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Timothy Peters knew where to place his No. 17 Tire Kingdom/Service Central Toyota Tundra to be in contention to win. The team qualified for the race in the 27th position with no fear of reaching the front of the pack before races
For much of the beginning laps crew chief Butch Hylton and Peters elected to stay in the rear of the field with their Red Horse Racing machine to let the field settle into position. The first caution of the evening flew on Lap 19 with Peters in the 32nd spot. Hylton brought Peters to pit road to the attention of the No. 17 crew for two right-side tires and fuel. Green-flag racing resumed on Lap 23 with the Danville, (Va.) native scored in the 20th spot.
Peters cracked into the top-10 on Lap 34 when he and teammate Todd Bodine became drafting partners in the eighth and ninth place. On Lap 43 the second caution of the evening was displayed for debris which allowed the Service Central Tundra to visit pit lane to top-off on fuel. Peters restarted ninth on Lap 46 and started to make his presence known towards the front of the field.
The team visited pit road for the second time when the fourth caution flag was waved for an accident on the frontstretch. A fuel only stop was what the team needed to make it to the end of what was scheduled to be a 100-Lap race. Peters catapulted off pit road and restarted fifth on Lap 68.
In superspeedway fashion, Peters was shuffled back through the draft and to the 10th place when the sixth caution flew on Lap 95. With his teammates in the third and fifth position, Peters was sure to make a move to put himself in the front of the pack. Green-flag racing resumed on Lap 99 for the first attempt at a green-white-checkered finish but was quickly halted on Lap 101 for an accident in turn four.
Peters picked up three positions and was scored seventh when the field took its second attempt at the green-white-checker. The No. 17 driver skillfully navigated his way through the draft and was sitting in the third-place when the race quickly stopped as an accident on the frontstretch brought out red-flag conditions. After the extensive clean-up the field took the final restart and Peters lined up third on the board behind teammates John King and Bodine in the first and second position on the front row.
As the positions unfolded and the trucks circled around the 2.5-mile tri-oval for the final time, Peters stayed tucked in right behind teammate King and fought hard holding on to his track position. The Daytona winner ultimately crossed the finish line in the second-place pushing his teammate to his first NCWTS win while capturing his second top-five and third top-10 finish in five starts at the track.
